well i worked at a repair shop for locks and i was paid minium wage with the whole year me working their never did the owner dare to mention at least a 50cent raise after 6months.

Now it was my fault for not saying something, but the store was getting very little customers compared to last year so I didnt ask about a raise because they where cutting my hours .

Now i was "laid" off back in jan.09 and well yesterday my friend found out through source that I was fired because the new management that came in the week of me losting my job caught me taking 10 bucks from the register which was true(by camera). now they tolled me that they didn't need me anymore so i was like watever i only had 15hrs a week and never given a rise and the store was running a really really shitty customer service. Now I must say am not perfect and lucky he didnt call the cops and yes by definition am a thief for me taking the 10bucks for a job that I did for a costumer.

Now I have been looking for a new job and now that I know this! I feel that my old job has been killing my chances of geting a new job! now what should I do when i fill out a application? when they ask about my last job? since a been their a WHOLE YEAR!

right but I was talking to my friends mom whos a big boss at a hospital about how she screens interviews and how she can tell bs when the hiree has a 9month time frame in their application with no job experience in between jobs and that hurts them getting hired becuase they usually have a very bad excuse for not having a job in that time frame, so she feels that their hinding something.

    how old are you anyway??

if youre 18 or under they arent going to be expecting you to have very much work experience anyway, and they probably wouldnt even consider you first anyway..

if you are over 18, you should have more then 6 months exp. and if not, find something cheap.. Like bussing tables or dishwashing and get some exp. and a place like that wont even care if you have no exp.

Your previous employer didn't screw up your chances of finding another job. You did that all by yourself. You need to stop whining and trying to blame the big bad world for your choosing to be a thief. The economy is lousy. There are very few jobs available right now. Believe me, I'm out of work myself. Keep looking and something will come through. And remember, no one likes a thief.

Wah, wah wah. You need to accept a lot more than this. And yes, if it is on record that the reason you were fired was for stealing, you will have a very hard time finding a job anywhere. Over and above how hard it is right now. Your words mommas boy: believe me that i have TRIED NAD TRIED to get dishwashing jobs and bussing but nothing men and i think that my job that i got caught stealling has been fing up chances of getting a job. You are blaming them for fucking up your chances. Read your own posts before posting again.

Except where I said to hang in there and something will come through. Accepting your responsibility is only one part of getting past this. You have to be open with an employer IF they ask about it. But, you have a right to wallow in your own bullshit. Enjoy it.

Maybe you can get a job in the black market? They expect you to steal as long as you don't steal from them. Check out working on Wall St.

now that I know this! I feel that my old job has been killing my chances of geting a new job!

By law , they can only verify that you worked there, legally they aren't allowed to ask much outside of that... I know it goes on.. but hey.. chances are they won't call anyway

ok billyjean, i'm going to give you pratical help.
first off, don't respond to jharyn! what he is doing here in this thread, is quite close to trolling. don't fall for his shit anymore, if you keep feeding him like you have been doing so far, you will wind up getting banned from the group. so, just don't fuck with him anymore!

second, your ok with the theft bit. you made a bad mistake. treat it like a learning experence and, DON'T REPEAT IT!

third, i have done the "hiring" at jobs i've had. i say "hiring" when, what i was really doing was 'screening.' if you friend's mother is reviewing applications and resumes then, most likely she is a 'screener;' she does not hire anyone. she sends them to the person who has the real power to hire most, likely that is the director of a department or, someone higher up.
HER JOB IS TO SCREEN PEOPLE OUT. NOT HIRE THEM! in the old days this was called the 'personal department.'

forth, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, get a copy of the latest edition (2009) of a book entitled: "what color is your parachute?" by, richard bolles.
read and, FOLLOW IT TO THE LETTER!
right now your spinning your wheels in finding work. this book will get you unstuck and, let you find the job that right for you!

a little about me. i worked for almost 17 years as a LIFE/Work counselor and, i have used this same system too, to find work.
i, and, other people i have worked with, have used this system to pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off to get our work lives moving again.
i have worked with people who have done far, far, far worst things then you have done and ALL OF THEM WERE ABLE TO FIND WORK.

get a copy of Parachute. read and work through it.
if you run into roadblocks, e-mail me and i well be happy to help you out.
    i'm pulling for you billyjean!

ok, again, parachute will help you with the interviewing process and, your question too.
however, i will answer the question for you. i just went back and re-read your first post. billyjean you are young and, you have not yet learned much about what is called "management speak." to understand "management speak" you need to learn it. no one has taught it to you so, you don't understand it, yet, you can learn it.
i will translate what your boss told you when you were "laid off." what your boss said in "management speak" was... "your fired for "stealing" 10 bucks but, i'm saying you were laid off due to the economic depression, we are in right now. if someone contacts me about your references, i will tell them you were laid off due to the depression that, lead to me having to cut expeneses."
what your boss said in plain english was... "if i'm contacted about a reference for you, i will tell them you (billyjean) were laid off due to the effects of the depression here at work. tell them you (billyjean) were laid off because, that is what i am going to tell them."

i very, very stongely doubt, your old boss is dumb enough to come right out and say he fired you.
he would look like an idiot to the person checking your reference and, if he did say he fired you that, would also look bad on you too for staying around and working for such an idiot.
you old boss would also be killing his own career if he said he fired you. i'm sure he is not dumb enough to risk a lawsuite which would get him fired.

if you are still fearfull about what your old boss is saying about you then, get your father or mother or, some older person around your parents age group, to call up your old boss and tell him they are checking your references for a job they interviewed you for. you will find out that way what your old boss is saying about you to others.
if it does turn out he is telling others you were fired then, ask you parents to contact their attorney and, have him (attorney) send your old boss a letter. if you can't afford an attorney then, go to the free legal aid center in your area and, get help there.
ONLY (I REPEAT, ONLY) USE AN ATTORNEY AS A LAST RESORT!

now, to recap all this in a condensed form.
your old boss said you were laid off and, that is what he will tell anyone who contacts him checking your references; therefore, you tell people during interviews, that you were laid off due to effects of the current depression that, cause your last job to not be bringing in enough income to keep you on staff.

So, I'm confused. Were you laid off or fired? When they let you go, what did they tell you? "We're letting you go" means you're fired, also. Did they specifically say they were laying you off? Because if they did, that's all you have to put on your future applications. Your friend was the one who told you they fired you, right? Well, I assume your friend wasn't your boss and it's up to your (ex)boss to tell you if you were fired or not.
