Let's see.... My first official car was a '63 Dodge Dart GT. 225 six with a four barrel, push button drive, 14" wide tires on the back, 13" narrow up front. Helper springs in the back so the tires didn't rub, cut out the hood for sorta scoop, ripped off the bumpers, threw away the air cleaner, installed a tach out of an XKE, and a Muntz four and eight track. Steered kinda funny due to the different wheel sizes but always landed on four wheels.
My first was a '63 Buick Riviera. I paid $1000 to a garage that replaced the transmission and the car was mine. It was the same color as this one....
My first car! A 1565 VW. Got it in 1970. It's paint was already faded from the sun in the Caribbean islands, but it was a great car for St. Thomas. I out oversized Cooper radial tires on the back so it had better clearance on dirt roads. The radio had one speaker on the left of the steering wheel which put out decent sound, to listen to the latest hits on WVWI AM radio... it's name was Urge. Paid $500 for it.
I also had a 1976 Buick Skyhawk V6 with a 3 or 4 speed, can't remember which. Like the one below, but it had the "Offical Pace Car" decal thingy like the Regal in the picture. It must have been ultra rare as I can't find any pictures or even a mention of it anywhere. It was okay but front heavy, always landed on the front wheels first and would bottom out. Also the driver's door was sagging due to rust and I had to lift it up to get it to latch.
Those VW bugs are so cool!! I had an orange one--a 63 I think. So I was gonna take a break from roofing in Hawaii and take a vacation on the mainland for a month or so. I still owed money to the bank on the VW, so I contacted them and asked if I could ship it to the mainland for my vacation. NO!! --they said. Guess they thought I wouldn't come back and pay the V-dub off. Well, I would have because I did come back ---but before I left to go on my vacation, I parked the VW at the airport with the keys under the floor mat and told the bank if that's the way they were gonna treat me, they could pick it up at the airport!! So that was the last I saw of that pretty little orange VW.
My second car, bought new, was a 1975 VW Rabbit. I bought one of the first ones available as soon as they came out. $1999. Of course they added more like door panels and cocomats to drive up the price to $2300. At that price, I insisted they keep in the Blaupunkt stereo. I bought the only model they had on the lot, the test vehicle. It was a great car with transverse mounted engine. It was so different from other cars at the time, all boxy. But one fatal flaw was the fuel injectors which always got clogged requiring a tow and dealer repair. Here's a pic. My car was same lemon yellow. I once towed a uhaul trailer with it about 1200 miles! Powerful little car.
That's a nice looking car! Only new car I ever bought right off the showroom floor, was a black Chevy Nova like this next one. DAMN!! these things are selling for 25 to 50 thousand dollars!!!! Oh, why didn't I keep it?
My first car was a convertible Fiat 850 Spyder Coupe. It was a fun little sports car but I replaced it with a '70 Thunderbird that looked just like this. They called that color, Forest Green. It had a wrap-around back seat that was perfect for dates. And it was fast. My friend had a Trans Am and we raced one time----he could not even keep up. I had a CB Radio to keep track of where the cops were on road trips. My handle was, The Blue Guru. It had power seats, power windows, power locks... But, having forgotten my keys in it a few times----I learned that it was very easy to break into!
They did in many ways. My dad had a '59 Thunderbird. But there were still design points that told you----yep, its a thunderbird.
