...A forward that was complaining about the usage of Native American terms and names as sports team names. Come the fuck on, people! This girl is the first of Native American descent that I've ever known personally who actually felt strongly about it, but then again, she fucking whines about everything. I don't have a huge chunk of Indian blood in me, but I am about 1/16th Cherokee, and going as far as to say that a team called the "Redskins" is racist is just ridiculous to me. Maybe because I was raised just hearing team names and not thinking anything of it. But honestly...racist? My opinion about racism is the biggest thing is for everybody to stop segregating themselves! If you accuse someone of being prejudice against a race, you imply that skin color means something. Your heritage may mean something, but the color of your skin does not. I swear, I want to take people who run around crying "racist" and send them to a deserted island somewhere so that they'll run around, accusing each other of racism and leave the rest of us who just want peace alone. *steps off soapbox*
I think she should smoke'em peace pipe. Seriously, the "Redskins" is purty-bad. But naming it after tribes like the Seminoles or Illini should be considered a honor IMHO.
We still cant see you. Yeah my old schools had to change thier team names (Middle school Warriors, junior high Thunderbirds and HS Tomahawks) Seems after years it all of the sudden became offensive.
most don't bother me, but Redskins is terrible....its no different than "Blackskins" or "Slant Eyes" I get their point really....no other ethnic groups seem to have a chief wahoo type mascot etc plus, I don't think the fact that you are 1/16th native american is relevant at all to your story how is "redskin" not racist, its referring to an ethnic groups skin color, and a decimated ethnic group at that not saying they should have to change it, but yea, how could it not be racist
lol.. I am part Cree too, but doesn't just about every "white" person in Canada who has at least one ancestor who has lived in Canada for more than 3 generations have some "First Nations" in them? Anything can be offensive if people want to take it that way. People like to be offended these days. Racial sensitivity is in vogue. But yes, "redskins" is pretty bad.
Redskins is kind of a derogatory name, I will give them that, but I agree with daisymae, it's not being used that way, so...the problem is? Guess people just like to feel they have reason to complain about something. I guess I should've just said I'm part Cherokee. That might have been more "relevant." My point was, it doesn't offend me at all, and I'm proud of my heritage.
She should be proud of her heritage, I mean If all the indians were like the fictional Hekawi Indians on F Troop, no sports team would dare use a native american symbol to represent the fighting spirit Hotwater
What about all these fairytails and fables people are now bitching about? Someone got mad about Bah Bah Black Sheep and said it is racist. They were talking about changing the name to Rainbow sheep. How fucked up is that? It's a fucking sheep. It's not like it's called Bah Bah Black People. Someone also got mad about Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. They think it is offensive to refer to them as dwarves instead of "little people." What the hell? When I think of Snow White and the dwarves, I don't think of real life midgets/dwarves, whatever they want to be called. I think of like elves or something, which are completely fictional and therefor not offensive. I'm sure it is only a matter of time before Santa's helpers are changed too, since some people seem to think elves and dwarves are the same thing as "little people".
yeah, calling a person a redskin, would be very derrogatory, but I think most people dont even think of the washington redskins as using a racist name. if you get rid of the redskins, you better get rid of the cleveland indians too. they arent from india. its weird how native americans got so many sports teams name after them. you dont see alabama porch monkeys, or blackies........ or spear chuckers....... but wait, there is the fighting irish......... how derrogatory is that!!!!!!!!!!!
*giggles* I think we should change the color of wallets from black to rainbow, or even transparent because it implies that black people have money, and that offends me. (lol's at self) But yeh, i'm going to agree with the masses (of HF, not IRL, duhhh) and say that all this PCness is pissing me off. I don't see why redskin would be derogatory, i'd just see it as a way of identifying a people, but i'm not form the US so i don't know if it has a history or anything like that. I called an American dude a yank, once, and he got all pissed off at me and i didn't know why
Gets prepared to be attacked.... I think it is kinda racist and I have thought that for years.... *Walks away slowly*
Well, Lucky is right, some of it is offensive, but I'm talking about the fairytales that people get mad about for foolish reasons. Some of the stuff is offensive, I agree, but the majority of it is ridiculous. I love the sketch they did on Blue Collar Comedy with Larry the Cable Guy reading politically correct fables to the children. "Vertically Challenged Native American Riding Hood." or something. Funny shit.
