    I Like Movies
    December 27, 2009

I have been writing my personal Movie Blurbs and posting them on the Web since Brokeback Mountain in December 2005. And, I usually see one movie a week because, well, I like movies - it's my thing. I will see serious drama but my preference is escapism thru romantic comedy or action adventure, usually of the Sci-Fi type.

As of today I have done 187 such Reviews/Blurbs. (That's not counting my Nude Reviews that I did for naturist newsletters in the 1990s)

I recently posted one of my Movie Blurbs for Avatar which I have seen twice already and plan to see again while it runs in theater.

A reply poster on one site mentioned that they had expended their movie allowance by having seen another movie this month. ONE MOVIE A MONTH !!??

Well, I can understand people on a tight budget, but for me it is a matter of priority. I live an otherwise frugal lifestyle and have very few expenses. Seldom eat at restaurants, don't go to bars, don't smoke ($5 a pack) and do most of my shopping at K-Mart. Plus, I never go to movies at night - always a matinee, which currently runs $8. Even if I did go at night it would still be $7.50 with my senior discount. Oh, I never buy popcorn or drinks, which even the smallest of each would surpass my $7.50 admission.

Still, I watch a lot of movies, averaging 47 a year for the past four years. So, today I got all my old movie stubs that were kept in a cup and threw them out - but first writing down their amounts.

I don't make a budget but if I did it would have to be $325 a year for movies. Yes, over the last four years I have spent $1,296.50 on movies. (2006, $311.50; 2007, $285; 2008, $322.25; 2009, $385.25) The annual increases were due to rising prices even in the senior rate from $6.50 in '06 to the current $7.50.

As I said, I plan to see Avatar again. Sometimes I see movies more than once in theater. Star Trek alone cost me $37.25 for the five times I saw it in theaters around the country (3X in Miami + Wash. DC & St. Louis).

Oh, the two-disc Star Trek DVD cost me another $26. Which brings me to another movie expense, my collection of 415 DVD's, most bought used for about $5 to $10 but some of which I pay the premium price when they first come out, like I will with Avatar.

Right on Sir, that's great, keep on doing what you're doing, and love the Theat, I do think Avatar was really, really good, but it was basically Dances with Wolves in space, but still great!

Hey, what do you think of this?

Since December 2005 I have done 244 movie Blurbs. .

Last year I did the numbers and found out I've watched an averaging 47 movies a year for the previous four years. Just did the numbers again and found out that over the last year I saw and wrote about 56 movies. I guess I really watch a lot of movies.

With my average movie cost over the years I figured that if I kept a budget there would be $325 a year for movies. So today, like I did last year, I got all my old movie stubs and wrote down the amounts of each.

Well, I was over budget in the movie dept. having spent $488.50 on movies in 2010.

That includes seeing Avatar two more times in 3-D and IMAX this year after seeing it twice last December.

But, some ppl blow more than that on a weekend. I guess I got a lot more hours of entertainment for the buck.

    LOL @ Ori. =D

Shale, I very much enjoy your movie blurbs as well... I love how you include screen shots and everything and they are always well written! =D

Going to the theater can definitely get expensive, tho... It's more the snacks and drinks than the movies themselves though. However last night I went to see Tron in Ft Lauderdale at the Blockbuster IMAX theater, which is the biggest screen in FL. Two tickets were $26 which is actually cheaper than going to see a 3-D movie at Oakwood or Aventura and there screens are smaller and there sound isn't as good either. =/

I'll watch 10 movies in a week and then not see another for 3; so I have no clue what I average. I did have 600 rated movies within days of getting my Netflix free trial..

I might even average more when I'm broke, due to the miracles of the Internet and Free Movies! On Demand

I've always found it so strange how there are movie lovers like you and movie lovers like me.
Ones that just want to enjoy the show, and ones that want to be damn well entertained.
Movie lovers either love movies a lot, or love great movies a lot; there seems to be little middle-ground.

Since December 2005 I have written 305 movie Blurbs. .

Just did the numbers again and found out that over the last year I saw and wrote about 61 movies. I guess I really watch a lot of movies.

Today, like I did last year, I got all my old movie stubs and wrote down the amounts paid on each one and found that I spent $471 on movies in 2011.

That includes getting seven movies for free on my Regal Crown Club card and the seven movies I saw in Missouri at $5 each. With repeat viewings of 11 of my favorite movies I actually went to the movies 72 times last year.

But, some ppl blow more than that on a weekend, so guess I got a lot more hours of entertainment for the buck.

Its funny how torrents seem to have killed the music industry and TV and yet boosted the movie industry.

Don't know about TV but the live scene is thriving and lesser known bands are touring way more almost exclusively due to torrents.

Since December 2005 I have written 367 movie Blurbs. .

Just did the numbers again and found out that over the last year I saw and wrote blurbs about 62 movies. I guess I really watch a lot of movies.

Today, like I did last year, I got all my old movie stubs and wrote down the amounts paid on each one and found that I spent $502 on movies in 2012.

That includes getting five movies for free on my Regal Crown Club card.

With repeat viewings of 8 of my favorite movies I actually went to the Cinema 70 times last year. This seems to be the norm each year, usually one movie per weekend, sometimes two - it is my leisure routine. I only go to matinees, riding my bike on good weather days. (I will ride in the rain if it is a must-see movie showing)

I have seen the cost of my senior discount tickets go from $7.50 to $8 starting in May.

Also, this year I have seen the trailers before the feature movie increase from 15 minutes to 20, which is quite annoying especially when watching a movie that is nearly 3 hours long. IDK how much money theaters make from showing trailers but it looks like they are squeezing their customers at every turn.

Since December 2005 I have written 423 movie Blurbs. .

Just did the numbers again and found out that over the last year I saw and wrote blurbs for 56 movies. I guess I really watch a lot of movies.

Today, like I did last year, I got all my old movie stubs and wrote down the amounts paid on each one and found that I spent $545 on movies in 2013.

With repeat viewings of 13 of my favorite movies I actually went to the Cinema 68 times this year. This seems to be the norm each year, usually one movie per weekend, sometimes two - it is my leisure routine. I only go to matinees, riding my bike on good weather days. (I will ride in the rain if it is a must-see movie showing)

I have seen the cost of my senior discount tickets go from $8 to $8.50 starting in May at the Regal Theater, while it was $8.25 at Frank's Intracoastal until November.

However, starting on May 17, 2013, Regal quit giving senior discounts on Friday thru Sunday. So, since I am equidistant to both theaters, rather than pay $9.50 at Regal I started going to Intracoastal instead, which means instead of Regal making an extra $27 on me since May, they have lost $256 (and continue to lose my business). So much for petty greediness.

Also, this year I have seen the trailers before the feature movie increase from 15 minutes to 20 minutes at Regal, which is quite annoying especially when watching a movie that is nearly 3 hours long. IDK how much money theaters make from showing trailers but it looks like they are squeezing their customers at every turn. The Intracoastal shows only 10 to 15 minutes of trailers, so it remains my theater of choice and I only go to the Regal to pick up the rare movie that is not showing at Intracoastal.

Still, I like this pic I got at an empty Regal Auditorium on an early matinee in 2007.

Since December 2005 I have written 475 movie Blurbs. .

Just did the numbers again and found out that over the last year I saw and wrote blurbs for 52 movies. I guess I really watch a lot of movies. Four short of last year but only one movie appealed to my interest in December so that is probably why.

Today, like I did last year, I got all my old movie stubs and wrote down the amounts paid on each one and found that I only spent $435 on movies in 2014. That too is down $110 from last year even with the increase of a dollar at Regal. That is because I only did one repeat viewing of a movie instead of the 13 I did last year. In fact, this is the least amount I have spent on movies since 2011.

However, the norm seems to be about one movie per weekend, sometimes two - it is my leisure routine. I only go to matinees, riding my bike on good weather days. (I will ride in the rain if it is a must-see movie showing)

From January thru February I went to the Intracoastal theater, which was a dollar cheaper and occasionally had $6 movies. However, in March the Intracoastal closed so now my only Cinema within biking distance is the Regal South Beach. It would be nice if someone would reopen that theater again.

Since December 2005 I have written 528 movie Blurbs. .

Just did the numbers again and found out that over the last year I saw and wrote blurbs for 53 movies one more than the previous year. I guess I really watch a lot of movies.

Today, like I did last year, I wrote down the amounts paid on each one and found that I only spent $488 on movies in 2015. That is $53 more than last year due to an increase of half a dollar at Regal Cinema on Lincoln Road, Miami Beach. I only did one repeat viewing of a movie this year. I did have 5 free passes this year, 2 from Regal, 2 from donating blood and 1 from my friend Publix Girl, Loli who is also into movies.

The norm still seems to be about one movie per weekend - it is still my leisure routine. I only go to matinees, riding my bike on good weather days. (I will ride in the rain if it is a must-see movie showing).

While several times I did see more than one movie a week, it still came out less than 56 for the year because, even tho I retired and no longer have a job to take my time, I have been to Europe twice and Hawaii once this year.
