ive been diagnosed with it for i dunno..some time now and i was on medication for it for a little bit but i really didnt like it because i lost all interest in things that i usually do and like, and i just overall am not a fun person to be around when im on it.
Anyways, i started homeschooling today and i just couldnt read....its not technically homeschooling yet because we have none of the materials, but my brother and sister went back today so i had to read all day....from 8 am till around 1 i got through only 80 pages of this book that im trying to read, which isnt very much. there was times when i would just not want to read anymore and id end up watching the smoke from my incense or go lay down or turn on some music....just shit that i didnt want to do in the first place but ended up doing instead of what i wanted to do, which was reading.
Im googling for some non medicinal help(non pill form anyways) to get past this shit, but havent found anything yet. I really really wanna be able to read without losing interest, and graduate this year, but im getting worried that this will only worsen thruout the year.
I need some help, any help would be appreciated, except for going to see a doctor or telling my parents. Im not getting put on them pills again.
    Thanks in advance.

I'm in a similar boat, I think... I'm going to try some concentration excercises. I'll let you know how if it helps out.

Drinking one or two cups of coffee in the morning, and eating one or two pieces of toast with peanut butter, is an old home remedy. The idea behind it is similar to stimulant pills, but obviously much weaker. The protein in the peanut butter is supposed to help the weak stimulating effects of the coffee last longer. Maybe it will help.

If you don't mind me asking (I am a pharmacy student & technician) what meds have you tried? What doses, if you recall. The meds really shouldn't have made you lose interest in things you like to do. Are you or were you on any other meds? Do you think you may be depressed? Depression often accompanies, or is caused by ADD.

Other things that reportedly work for some people:

    - B-Complex vitamins
    - Ginko Biloba
    - Avoiding food dye, especially red & specifically red #40 (don't know why)
    - Avoiding processed food
    - Ginseng
    - Sudafed
    - excersise
    - meditation/relaxation exercises
I am sorry the meds haven't helped you two. They have been a MIRACLE for me. I wan't diagnosed until I was 16/17. Good luck to you both.

My son did not respond well at all to ADD medicines. Lo and behold, he doesn't have ADD, they just tried to pin that one on him. He has been diagnosed with obsessive compulsive personality and is doing very well on Luvox. He has gained weight on it though. I am a slow reader and can get easily distracted. I have to find total peace and quiet to read and fully concentrate. Different people have different ways of studying but there is kind of a method to it. If you are acting all cranky and down on those ADD meds, maybe you don't have ADD but something else. Good luck on trying natural remedies. Hope that works.

i have ADHD and they put me on ritalin when I was in the 7th grade, it just made me all antsy and loud! I still have a hard time concentrating but I add things I like with things I hate, say If i was reading a school book I wold crank up some good tunes or something.
Reward myself with something nice for getting all the bullshit done!!

You may be alergic to milk or wheat... Try stopping milk or cheese products for a week and see if you get some relief...

Try staying away from wheat products if the milk fast does not werk...

I know of some kids who did awful on Ritalin and Cylert and did very well on Adderall or that newer, non stimulant one (Photo help me, have a migraine and can't remember the name of the new ADD med!)

Not all ADD meds are the same. Maybe try some therapy along with a new med. See a NEUROLOGIST, most pediatricians are basically clueless about proper ADD treatment. Some kids even do well on antidepressants (NO you won't kill yourself, this is a falacy!) There are many treatments for ADD, please don't drop out of school because of this. Have your parents see a GOOD Neurologist and get some real help.

Strattera is the new, non-stimulant ADD medication. It makes more norepinepherine available to your brain, in a way pretty similiar to how SSRI's make more serotonin available.

(Maggie, you are right, antidepressants will not cause you to kill yourself. This is all CYA for the drug companies, and the FDA is buying into it. This is really absurd)

    (CYA = cover your ass)

I used to be on adderol, and ritalin. Ritalin 1st.

Anyways, they just made me feel kinda high. I never told my doctor that because I just had fun with them. (I was 11-14) Then they started to make me lose a buttload of weight and I started to get twichy, So I got off of them.
Then Later the doctor was like "I may have missdiagnosed him." I had Adhd in the 90's when the docotors felt special everytime they perscribed someone legal meth.

Anyway herbs can help alot. I havn't read up on stratera, but it seems better than the alternatives.

I kinda outgrew my ADD, with a combination of Martial Arts and Military school.

I think the key to keeping it in check is just keeping busy.

Try seeing a nutritionist? A lot of people have found that by changing their diet they can control ADD better.

uhh ADD isnt a real disease, you know that right? paying attention is the first key to intellicgence, and americans arent very intelligent, so they make up shit as they often do.

I have ADHD and have just had to learn to become super selfdiciplined...which is really hard. Find rewards for yourself. Like you can watch tv without feeling guilty after you read 20 pages or whatever it is you have to do. Most people with attention deficiet spectrum disorders are brighter than average, so you can do it. I have a quote I made and taped on my steering wheel (I take it down before others enter the car) that says 'you know want you want to be so don't be lazy'. It worked wonders and keeps my mind on what I need to do or finish

This is completely wrong. ADHD, while not a disease, is a real mental disorder. Brain scans now prove it. ADHD patients are typically HIGHLY INTELLIGENT, which exacerbates the problem. They get bored quickly.

Sorry Dr Fractual..., but thanks for playing ;)

I agree that it is mis/overdiagnosed.
