Hello all! I am new here and I was hoping you guys could help me out.
to sum it up I want really fat dreads. I have been growing my hair out for about a year or so now, And It is really straight hair. I know nothing about dreads so I was thinking about just letting my hair grow for some time then seeing a barber or something. Now I was actually curious if there is something i should be doing to my hair so they could be fat dreads later?? And are their some good resources you could direct me to?? Any advice would be great

OK!! I am going the natural route for sure.
And Since soaring eagle has the sickest dreads i have ever seen in my life I am going to take his advice.

My hair is kinda long, But how long should it be to have really nice fat dreads?

From what I have heard it take up a percentage of your hair right?
And I want my dreads to be ATLEAST 1 inch in diameter if not more.

I was very impatient the other day and I tried backcoming a section of my hair in the front, It looked nice and fat and fluffy not really tight. I supposed the tightness would come over time. It was pretty funny, no matter what i did it stood up like a large spike and everyone looked at me like i was nuts. It gave my friends something to jank on.

Is backcoming a good method?? Or should I just chill? I did not use any wax
and I don't really plan on it. I know nothing of dreads so..

yeah anyways thanks for the advice.

I recommend backcombing. You don't have to use wax. It really depends on what you want your dreads to look like.

On my site there is a gallery with a good balance of natural dreads over time, and others locks with backcombing or wax. Mine are on the about page.

    Peace.

BassScholar, I would recommend you just do a some more research before you decide if you want dreads or not. Look at pictures of people who have backcombed and natural locks. Natural locks takes A LOT of patience, and you don't have as much control, it's more about letting nature take it's course and letting your hair do what it wants. In my opinion, this is the only way, and your locks turn out much better. If you want more control over the size of dreads, you could backcomb, but I am pretty set against it and don't advise ppl to do that.

Dreads are not an instant hairstyle, you should be very sure that you want dreads, as they take lots of patience and dedication. Just do some more research and good luck.

EDIT: oh and regarding the size of dreads.....it is probably not a good idea to have a set vision of what you want your locks to look like. That is because they will probably not turn out exactly how you expected, and then you will not be happy with them. So however they turn out, be happy and accepting of them. If you want fatter dreads though, you can always let them congo (join) up to create bigger ones.

thanks for the tips guys. I was looking up at some DR bonners non residue soap.
And I found like a million brands. Hey you guys know a good place to get some??
I want very random dreads...Mine are not out of a fashion...
I guess we all have our reasons. Hey, I also looked at alot of sites and I don't really understand some of the terms.

I also Decided to take out the single dread or dreadlette that I backcomed.
As it turned out my day job will not allow a single dread they say it was way to spikey. They say if I did my whole head it would be cool though.

So Im just never going to comb or wash my hair with conditioner. And maybe I will have sic dreads one day.

Hey soaring Eagle, I read in another thread you started your dreads at 2 inches.
Now some other guy in this thread told me I should let my hair grow if I want fat dreads later on, Do you agree? Or should I just start my dreads now??

Thanks for all the input guys. I'd rather truth than all the lies and money making schemes others offer.

here is a pic so you guys get an idea of my hair.

your hairs plenty long to start
congoing into really big dreads happens over time and wether dreads start small or not dont matter if they wanna congo they will at any time
get yourself a goor tam or somethin

to go natural just wash n weart and over timne feel for knotty clumps formin and seperate em from eachother as u feel ,
wether thin or thick doesnt matter so much cause anytime u forget to seperate loing enough they combine and get thicker...

    Ok thanks for the advice.
Now I have been looking around and I was wondering if there is difference in the way backcombed dreads or natural locks look?

Another poster added a link but I cannot really tell how they started the locks.

And also soaring eagle, What is a goor tam? I am not familiar.

    appreciate the replies, PEACE! :H

Warning: lost post with looots of info for you!

natural dreads and backcombed dreads really do not look too different. if they are backcombed reaaalllllllly tight, they probably will not have as many loops and kinks as strictly natural dreads. I respect people that do them naturally, but i am pretty instant gratification, and had my dreads backcombed.

there are different methods for backcombing...and making dreads...but if you go stricktly backcombing...this is my advice on how to do it...you will need a friend.

Get a backcombing comb...a metal, very close toothed comb like this one....
http://www.knottyboy.com/shop/accessories_and_extras/professional_dreading_combs/ (the metal one...not the plastic one)
    1. section out your hair with rubber bands, remember, don't make the sections as big as you want the dreads, the dreads will be fatter than the sections
    2. take a section, and backcomb about an inch of it..then put the comb in the middle of the backcombed part and tighten it (backcomb a little harder), and then do it at the end of the part you backcombed...and continue doing it.
It will probably be a little painfull...and long...but it makes for tight dreads. They will stick in all sorts of funny ways for the first week or so (i wear a bandana or tam, or hat to keep them down).
When the dreads are done, cut the rubberbands out.

Maintence: make sure you separate them (rip them apart..and don't let it go too long without ripping...then it'll hurt...a ton. been there done that), unless you want two dreads to combine, then just leave 'em (or do a hair wrap with hemp...i can make you a video on how to do that if you want).
Also, palm rolling them is good too...helps them get tighter...If you palm roll them when they are wet it will not do much though.

OH, and when you wash your hair (about 5 days after you get them first back combed, and every 3 days after that), make sure it is not right before bed...don't want moisture to stay in there and you end up with moldy dreads! I even go so far as blow drying my hair...just to make sure they don't keep moisture inside.

My favorite is dr. bronners tea tree soap. The lavendar one smells SO good, but the tea tree makes my dreads tighter for some reason.

if you want to rubberband them...i suggest 1. not doing it, but if you are intent on it, then tie pieces of hemp in there instead.

i have been wanting to do someone's dreads...wish you lived in Boston (do you?). lol.

p.s. a little tip that my friend taught me.....if there is a section of the backcombed dread (when it is finished), that is kind of loose, open it up a little bit, to form almost an 0 with hair, then take the end of the dread and put it through the whole numerous times untill it forms a knot looking thing. If you do that a lot on dreads they will be rope looking, but if you only do it once or twice on one dread it will just get it tighter. Don't loop it through untill it is reallyyyyy tight because that can cause the dread to get a little weaker.

    best of luck to you!!!

yup. they are awesome things :) i wish i had more :). a skull cap works too...but unless it's really strechy it will probably not fit over locks.

Best of luck to you, and make sure you post photos!!!!

If you did use wax, then they wouldnt lock up.

Dont expect them to start looking good till like 7 or months, at least. Till then you'll have to deal with them looking goofy.
