After I caught my Coho limit this morning, I decided to drive up into the mountains and saw the ass end of a cougar sticking out of the bushes. I am pretty stoked about it, because I've only seen them a handful of times. I also saw a couple grouse (almost open season) and a jackrabbit. Stopped for a quick nude dip a remote lake. Good times all around.
The most interesting wild animal I saw was moving so fast that I didn't actually see it. All I know is it was about 1 and a half feet tall, brown, fuzzy as hell, and looked like a blur when running from one patch of woods to the next. We saw it or them twice, and neither time did our eyes get a chance to adjust. Your story is way cooler =P Awesome shit.
I do this wildlife stuff too. I've learned how to dress and walk so that I go unnoticed. Animals won't know you're there if you're quiet and blend into the scenery. .
I have never seen one of those! They look so beautiful in pictures and on film. It sounds like your day was lovely.
Ive never seen a cougar....we do have lynx around here and wolverines but they are rare...we even have at least one black panther but its even rarer (its an escaped pet) I'd love to see the albino moose probably the neatest Ive seen was a silver fox and a great owl that looked like it had a 8 foot wingspan it was so huge you could here the swoosh swoosh when it flew in what seemed like slow motion I really want to see an elk too..they are re-introducing them to this area but I havent been lucky enough to see a wild one yet (there are farms that raise them here for meat but I dont count that)
That sounds really great Sitka! I myself have never seen a Cougar but have seen some mighty large Feline prints in the snow. Mind I ask where abouts you are?
Addendum: My girlfriend got off work and we decided to go for a drive to see if this other logging road circuit was still drivable (I swear this isn't all we do - I just fixed a relay on my jeep this morning so it cools properly and am stoked to do some exploring). I managed to simultaneously get two flats. On a highway of a logging road. So we hiked out to the mainline with our dog (about 5 clicks), got picked up by the nicest hippy couple, went and grabbed our tires off the vehicle (left it jacked up with the one spare on). I borrowed a buddy's pickup to drive back out in the morning with the flats repaired.
Honestly, the list of the things I love about where I live would be 10 feet long. Especially compared to other places I've lived (Vancouver, Prince George) and other places I've visited. In a perhaps more normal view, at least one economic magazine ranked where I live as one of the 10 worst places to live in Canada. Different strokes, I guess.
that is probably a really cool place imo to live nature wise... are mountain lions known to attack human / moving vehicles? i am not sure how i would react if i saw any part of one in the wild lol
It is an odd ecosystem. There aren't very many large animals (in terms of different species), but there is such a large area to person ratio you can find lots of them if you spend enough time in the bush.
That sounds like an awesome day! I have only seen cougars a couple times, but I was pretty excited when I did. I think my favorite animal sighting though was a bobcat family (I know, I am a sucker for the cute animals) Seriously though, I am jealous of your day
Had the feeling that you lived in BC.... I live in Burns Lake, some 250km North of Prince George. Have you even been to the Nass? Very beautiful there, some amazing hiking and kayaking/canoing there and In my general area.
