Study Zoology at school, I think that it's a year or two year program at most.

here's what i've found. almost any job that's really fun and rewarding pays next to nothing degree or no degree. There isn't a huge demand for people to play in a zoo all day. i got a friend that "works with" animals. he picks up shit and uses this machine that jerks off the elephants so the males don't kill the females. This machine is insane too it's like a garbage bag you put over the male's erection then it sort of functions as an aqua massager. That or you can always hold down animals while they put them to sleep, and feed them and get bit a lot.
Zoology is a 4 year degree btw.
Edit: my friend who worked at the zoo is a mortician now, and the friend who worked at the vets office lost his job for abusing the ketamine

You might try volunteering at Animal Humane Association or the like. I was a volunteer playing with the dogs, taking them out of their pens into a run and playing with tennis balls and stuff. Then I eventually got hired as a kennel worker.

No one here knows what they are talking about. Zoology really has nothing to do zoo animals at all. Its more the study of microscopic things. If you want to work as a keeper and or trainer there are two good two years programs in th US. One is the EATM program and moorepark college in cali. http://www.moorpark.cc.ca.us/~eatm/ The other is a program down in flordia. http://inst.santafe.cc.fl.us/~zoo/

Going to either one of those programs, you cant get a job at any zoo you want really. They are increadibly presitgous in the animal world. Unless you are a graduate from one of those programs then you WILL NOT get a job at a zoo with a two year degree. All zoos want it. If you want to work in rehabilation then you are going to want to work at a reserve of sancturary. Most of them offer inernships which are a good way to get your foot in the door without college, but the majority of these internships require your enrollment in a four year program. If you do go four years then you want to major in bilology unless the college has a special program. If you dont want to go too far from home then georgia tech has a decent program for animal behavior. Here is a list of all the sancturaries in the US, almost all of which offer internships http://www.taosanctuaries.org/sanctuaries/atoz.htm.

It does involve a lot of hard work and shoveling shit all day. But if you love animals, then the joy of helping animals is priceless. (And smelless.)

Sucks that Zoology is a 4 year degree... that could have given you a whole batch of career paths/ independent research to choose from that are related to animals.

Once again. Zoology has nothing to do with working with animals. Well it does, but not in the way you are thinking of. It realates more to the type of study where you sit in a lab all day looking at invertabres. Zoologists do not work hands on with animals the majority of the time. It involves the inner workings of animals and there bodies as oppsesed to animal behavior which is what he wants to do. It takes more of a bio-chemistry approach then a psycoligical point of view.

I know that Zoology has nothing to do with Zoos.

Yet they do get a whole lot of field work that brings them much closer to animals than a zoo can. They get to study animals in their natural environment. I know plenty of zoologists who only do field work and no lab-work.

Well thats just not true. They may have studied zoology, but they are not practicing it. You may know zoologists, but i work at a zoo in the research department. I know a shit load of people who go to africa 6-8 months out of the year. Ive worked at the zoo which has the third largest collection of mammals in the country. We are also about to open up the largest elephant sancturary in the world. its a big ass zoo, ive worked there for 6 years, and i know almost all of the people there. And i dont know one person, field researcher or keeper who majored in zoology. Thats not to see someone who has majored in it cant break into the field, but thats not what you should major in if you want to do field research or work in captivity.

As for being closer to animals in feild research then in captivity, well thats just not true. If your doing observational research in the feild then you are supposed to have as little contact with the animals as possible. And you can get increadibly close to animals in the zoo. I dont know why you say you cant. I play with the monkeys, pet the elephants, feed the bears and sharks, come face to face with lions and tigers. Have rinos charge at me, and train sealions. But your right. Thats not close at all.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm sure that you have a lot more experience in this than me. All I'm stating is facts I've learned from real life. Zoology has a whole lot of fields within it, such as Ethology which focuses primary on animal behaviour. I think that you have a very biased view of Zoology... it's a very broad study.

...and I've never claimed that you are closer to the animals in field research... I only claimed that you are researching them in their natural habitat.

Well theres where you said that you get closer to the animals.

Im not disagreeing with you either. I know that zoology is a broad field. But by majoring in somthing as broad as zoology you are going to be studying a lot of stuff that dosent pretain to what he wants to do. Plus even though zoology is broad, the zoology major in college is not. The courses that you take do not really pretain to feild research or animal behavior. I have been doing a lot of reasearch on different majors trying to figure out where to apply, and i want to do similar things to what he wants to do. And i know that there are better ways to get to where he wants to go.
