ahha. well. ok ill start by saying that ive always liked dreads and stuff. well that was a bad start. anyway. right now my hairs only like 3 inches long around. im pretty bad at this so ill just say some stuff - I have really bad dandruff and I cant get it to go away -Ive never had really long hair before -I told my mom I want dreads once (about a year ago) and she was really against it...(she said theyre dirty and all that) and basically I told my friends and they said I would look bad and other stuff like theyre dirty and all that jazz. -Im thinking it would be best to start once summer vacation comes because my hair would be longer (way longer then i have ever had it), and hopefully my dreads would start up before school starts again. -I dont know how to start them. but i have seen the knottyboy stuff and all that, even though i guess nobody likes that way? Im white and i have sort of dark brown hair and idk my hair kinda curls in the back. it just curls up. usually.... its not right now though... my hairs pretty straight. I want pretty thick dreads like 1/2" to 3/4" thick. info about beads and stuff or like dying the ends? Help??? Thanks -Jason :hat:
the best way for you , if you want to get them to look good by the time school kicks back in , would be to backcomb them . if you dont exactly know how to backcomb , look up on youtube. watever you do , dont use wax , it'll slow down the dreading process.(wax stays in the dreads , accumulates dirt, doesn't let your hair knot up properly) and you dont want to crochet too much, as it weakens the dread by opening a hole. but if you do , which is OK , get the smallest crochet hook as possible. palm-rolling is a daily task. BUT DONT OVER-DO IT , because ive heard stories of dreads falling off because of that. to bleach the ends , you simply apply bleach on them and let em sit for a few minutes to 15 minutes . OR until you get the desired discolorment. as for dye i personnally never tried , but it would be the same process i guess. btw, convince your mom how clean your hair is , even if you get dreads.
ah yes I ment bleach not dye. just so its like a dark blonde near the ends. if I do that would it be before or after the dreads are started? Whats the a good hair legnth to start dreading?
it doesn't really matter ,but if you bleach the ends BEFORE dreading , keep in mind that it will appear shorter when you backcomb. to start dreading , the minimum is 3 inches , but its a lot more maintenance because since its shorter , it unknots a lot easier. i had from 7 to 9 inches when i started
When it comes to your mom, sit her down and give her a heart to heart talk about it. My mom can be the bitchiest FemiNazi ever but sitting her down and handing her a cup of coffee makes whatever upcoming conversation go smoothly. I told my mom I was getting dreads and she at first was like "ewwww" and I explained everything to her. She was cool with it after that. That's my advice with dealing with the mums.
Thanks, any ideas when i should bring this topic up? Idk if I should now because I dont want to start for 4-5 months anyway... Im thinking next time she tells me I have to get my hair cut (might be tomorrow ) I can say I want it longer. Then she will say no, then I will say ___________? idk what ill say yet. lol. "i wanna get dreads ma!"
I have the same problem with my mom and my hair...not dreads though, just long hair. The only thing you can really do is just simply refuse to get a haircut. I usually tell my mom that if she makes me get a haircut, I will grow a really long beard or stop trying in school. Or do what moondoggie said and have a heart to heart conversation with her. I never did that, probably because I wouldn't know what to say.
It's best to tell her early. I'm not starting my dreads til March/April-ish. Not only is the dreads going to be a big step for you, but it'll be a big step for her too (Since your living under her roof). Hopefully she'll be supportive. It would suck to her her nag everyday which I assumed my mom would but she's now giving me tips on dreading, lol. So yeah, tell her you don't want the haircut and if she asks why then explain.
haha yeah. i dont know what to say to my mom either but im pretty sure that refusing wouldnt work either lol.
AhHA well. yeah another little problem from my mom would be how she doesnt want me to look. Its pretty crazy. The other day, well a few weeks ago actually, she "yelled" at me because of my hemp key chain/holder. She basically said that im trying to make it look like i support marijuana (well.... ) and she basically made up some crap and said something like "IF YOU GET PULLED OVER AND A COP SEES THAT YOUR GONNA GET IN MORE TROUBLE" cause everything I do shes afraid someone is going to be profiling. I kinda just said. no im not. why would they care. So im pretty sure shell say the same thing with dreads too. but god i want dreads more and more. I dont really like my hair as it is now. I just kind of have it as it is. no style. i just comb/brush it the way it naturally goes.... how often do you need to wash your dreads? With or without shampoo
You can't refuse? Is your mom the controlling power tripping kind? My mom is a naggy type. She never would force me to do stuff her way, but if I did something she hated (Like dying my hair blue or getting lip piercings) she would bitch and moan. But eventually she'd get over it. So, hopefully the dread thing will work out.
Well, moms just want the best for you. You WILL get stereotyped with dreads. Does she know your a pothead? When it comes to washing, most people wash once a week with Dr. B's. Some wash every 3 days or once every 2 weeks. It depends.
hah, hell yes my mom is the controlling power tripping kind. Eh. well sometimes. if i did something she hated like getting MY EAR pierced she would say im grounded and make me take it out. she wont let me get my ear pierced. but believe me if i was 18 i would, and she wouldnt stop me. i have to wait till im 18 to get any tattoos too, and she still says i cant once im 18. but my dad doesnt care SO yeah. its not really her decision. but yes, she has always wanted to controll what i look like, the clothes i wear, how my hair looks ect. its pretty bad.
I dont mind some stereotypes. but i could see how the constant nagging would get annoying. Me, a pot head??? what???? nah. well i guess so. she knows I wear hemp, I like raggae, I bought pineapple express, she saw me watching a weed documentary. we kind of just dont talk about it. but she has never actually had proof of anything. Idk shes kind of weird about it. sometimes (not recently) she would act like she would beat me if she busted me, but recently shes just been like. blah. idk. but ha yeah another example. i burnt some incense in my room one day, and then came down stairs to go on the computer then later i hear her "JASON!!!!! WHAT WERE YOU SMOKING UP HERE?!?!?!!?" i was like... "what?" then she was like whats burning, i said i burnt some incense, then she said if she ever catches me smoking shell beat my ass. (she wouldnt literally but she wanted to scare me) and my mom was deffinatley a hippy back in her day. i know she used to smoke weed and do drugs. and also i was watching tv with her once and they said something about legalizing marijuana and she was like "thats a good idea" so i dont know WTF is going on with her. lol
lol yeah. and my dad doesnt care right now but he cant let me cause of my mom. funny about how she wont let me do that, when she has her ears pierced, and has a small tattoo, and my dad recently got 3 tattoos and his ear pierced.
Awww, she must be bummed that she gave up weed but she got too used to the 'normal life' to go back to the hippy days. I think that's her problem, she bought into conformity. Bring up her past when talking about dreads. Lol, maybe that'll make her supportive.
lol maby. i just asked my friend about if i should get dreads and he said i shouldnt "because im white" ............buhhhhh. but yeah that was his only reason.
blame it on music and say you listened to some bob marley record backwards and it told you to go and get dreads and to smoke pot. If shes like every other over crazed protective mid america mom that should get her attention away from your hair and get her busy trying to put together pta's and writing letters to her politicians about the bad influence of reggae. Worked for kids that wanted to listen to heavy metal..
lol, im not sure that she would buy that. my moms past PTA also. i dont think she would care enough to write to politicians lol.
