What is it like? How is the cost of living? Can a fresh Certified nursing assistant/aspiring musician/thinking adventurer make it in a town like Asheville?

Im currently living in a western suburb outside of Houston, Tx. I would like to move somewhere with more laid back and interesting people. Plus a cooler climate. It is obnoxiously sticky down here off the gulf of mexico.

By the way, I plan on either finding a roommate or living in a van if I were to relocate.

Within 20min of being in Asheville for the first time I loved it. It has a laid back happy vibe. Ive found the people there to be some of the nicest most helpful people Ive met. I dont mean just the "hippy" types, even the avarage people are great. My friend got there with nothing but a bag of clothes. People who were pretty much total staranges helped him get a job, an apartment and gave him a car.
I try to go up there as much as I can, and I just feel better when Im there.
To me the cost of living is low, but Im from NY. I guess its about avarage, you can get a decent apartment for $400-500 a month.
Ive been looking at moving there and the job market seems better then it is here in SC, I dont know about nursing. I know the medical feild is pretty in demand everywhere though.

you will have alot of fun in asheville. Absolutley beautiful. I found it to be expensive. thats why I always rented a little out of town. Swannanoa was real cool. Didn't like south asheville much ie arden. Lived in burnsville for awile. too far from asheville but real cool country. Did live in kenilworth for awile but I like living on the other side of the hill.

I would move to Asheville. I visited there 2 years ago and it was pretty great. It's definitely a gem in the rough. I've lived in Philly/South NJ for most of my life and NYC for a little while, and I was impressed with Asheville's lack of rednecks and hillpeople and it's abundance of modern and urban commodities. It's a great artsy little town smack in the middle of beautiful mountains and scenery. The people are generally very friendly and considerate especially compared to what I'm used to of Philly, NJ and NY. It has the right mix of eccentricity and diversity without being stuffed up its own ass like the bigger metro areas. Also, everything is WAAAY cheaper than the Philly area, you'll probably find it cheap compared to Houston (I'm guessing) as well.

These people are from bigger cities so I guess cost of living is cheaper in Aville than a lot but I wouldn't call it cheap. If you're low on cash I'd say check out the many surrounding towns of Asheville. There are a lot and the cost goes down a heck of a lot when you leave the city.

I have visited Ashevill about 12 years ago, in order to visit the Billy Graham Cove Camp. Its landscape is so beutuful, but the people over there are a bit grumpy.

How steriotypical it is to get baptised inside the river, in the deep south. It reminds me of the baptismal sin in the film, Oh brother where art thou?
