i walked out of it in the theater, but i didnt have a watch and didnt know how long i'd been in there and knew i had work and just wasnt particularly impressed at the time. but i'm a big fan of the books, and had been introduced to the old bbc miniseries a while back. the biggest thing for me to get over was the appearance of marvin and the way they made zaphod two-headed with the second head hidden in the neck...i hated that.... but later on i watched the same movie for free on the tv and really, really enjoyed it. i wouldnt be opposed to getting the movie on dvd and it would be pretty good when stoned. but as with the bbc series, not because its particularly good, but because its enjoyable in a lame kind of way. obviously neither visual depiction of the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy have been very good on their own, but i find them both enjoyable in a strange way regardless. i like it.
as for some REALLY good movies, i personally love the shining, just about any other stanley kubrick movie, most quentin tarantino movies, both labyrinth and the dark crystal (jim henson is the shit), death to smoochy, lawrence of arabia, casablanca, key largo, rosemary's baby, the adventures of baron munchausen (the terry gilliam movie), monty python's now for something completely different, and the royal tenenbaums, the princess bride, and one flew over the cuckoos nest...these are just among my favorites, they aren't all and aren't anywhere close to all of the movies i enjoy.
have you seen Death Proof? personally i was disappointed with this movie.. glad i didnt go see it in the theatre.... otherwise i love all Tarantino movies
Wonderboys is a great movie, and it stars Michael Douglas as a pothead with Tobey Maguire as his pothead-apprentice. Okay, it's not nearly as weed-related as I'm making it out to be but it's a very good film.
