Ok.... This entire theory is based on the idea that the universe is infinite, not in a circular fashion as some believe but in a linear fashion--that is, if you COULD continue in a straight line, without following the curve of space, you could continue for an infinite distance, without returning to your original starting point. So with that in mind:

If space is indeed infinite, and it is inhabited by planets (as would make sense, since we live on one) then it would follow that there is an infinite number of planets. If there is an infinite number of planets, than there is an infinite number of possible locations, eh? So if there is a one in ten billion chance of something existing, it will exist, since there is an infinite number of chances. So, if there is any chance whatsoever of something existing, it not only exists, but exists an infinite number of times, and is existing at any given point in time. Make sense? So if it can happen, it is happening. So lets start out basic: somewhere exists a planet on which there is somewhere a creature which looks identical to bugs bunny, the cartoon character, and munches carrots, and says "Whats up, doc?" Because, it is possible that something could evolve like that, and so there is a chance--and with a chance, there is certainty. So it would also follow that there are an infinite number of planets exactly like ours, down to the last atom--plus a planet for each possible combination of atoms, including a planet, say, exactly like ours except that YOU don't exist, were never born. Or a planet on which marijuana is legal. Or a planet on which everybody trips on acid all the time, and you are considered to be "tripping" if you let your trip wear off. It's all happening, and happening now, including your mother raping you, or possibly a monkey--and if it's possible, it's happening... I'm getting scared now.

That's like the same thing with an infinit number of parallel worlds... where every possiblity and choice ever made has a seperate existance. From major decisions like "What if I went to colledge" to stupid little ones like "What if I ordered tea instead of coffee". Crazy.

our mind is finite. therefore we cannot perceive or have any true idea of infinity

How can our mind be finite? Take one person and compare their mind to a person who lives down the street - they have a very good chance of being completely different. A mind has no limits and therefore is infinite - there is no boundaries on what you can learn, or achieve if you put your "mind" to it. Which leads to the very fabric of existance which is to learn, experience, and gain enlightenment onto the next plane. There is no end, everything goes on, as the original post stated, in an infinite number of choices, and situations. Things that seem miniscule when you decide them, could be the turning point of your entire life.

So, yet again, how can a mind be finite when just the basics of choices, which are made by the mind, can change the entire course of your existance? There are an infinite number of thoughts to be thought, and deeds to be done. If you had a finite mind, then there would only be so many choices and so many deeds, until it was over and there would be nothing left. What kind of life would that be?

as a physicist i can say for certain that the universe is indeeded not infinite, however there is a possibility(one that i highly support) that there are an infinite number of parralel universes. it has to do with time travel and propability. i wont go into specifics unless someone asks.

as for the human mind to be infinite, not possible. the mere fact that a human canot comprehend complete nothingness is proof of that. that is where we get religion. some guy though about what happened after death, couldn't fit into his mind that one smply ceases to exsist, so he thought that you must go somewhere even though your body stays put(thus the creation of the idea of a soul) and that soul must go to a good place. instant religion...sorry, i ramble when ive stayed up all night...

and the mind making an infinite number of choices is called the butterfly effect and has to do with my parralel universes.

If the universe isn't infinite (which I believe it isn't)... Then what's beyond it? Nothingness? Is that possible?

    Minddd fuckkkk...

it wouldnt matter what is outside the universe; as humans we would not be able to imagine it, for we are in the universe

yeah, death does put a limit on the mind doesn't it. these ideas about infinity might be a denial of death. accepting the finiteness of things need not be made out to be so terrible. there is still alot to live for and experience

wow you guys actually understand me. in my other forum, they all had to argue with there own ideas. you guys are cool in that you listen to anothers veiws of the world.

    sweet.

i think that though we are in the universe, we could still immagine whats in thos infinite parrelel universes. however we would do so with an immagination completely based in this universe.

Does it even matter if space is infinite...as far as unlimited possibilites are concerned...so long as time is infinite? I know time is an illusion and all that...but you know what I mean. The universe will always exist...presumably all of its material will always exist. Doesn't that imply infinite probabilities? And by exist I don't mean that it won't ever completely cave in on itself...but if it exploded once, why not again? Etc. And maybe this has already happened an infinite number of times. And...given that time is an illusion...who is to say that, in respect to what I'm saying...that Bugs Bunny doesn't exist right now. Doesn't it just seem right and natural that Bugs Bunny really exists somewhere?

I think you're wrong about the human mind being finite because it can't comprehend nothing. If it can't then neither can you...how do you know that something you can't comprehend even exists? It seems ridiculous for you to claim to be able to know so. So, technically speaking it could be infinite...its only limit would be impossibilities. Do you think that not being able to achieve the impossible makes something finite?

what i dont understand is why it matters at all to consider the possibilities of an infinitely large universe. we are talking about domains that we will never be able to explore, so it doesnt really matter what there is beyond our scope of vision. we will never find an identical earth where henry has a snout and eats raddish icicles

ah stonerbill, you may have a phd in bongology, but that seams to be the scope of your reson. we wonder because discovering things about the universe is the best high i can get(and ive done alot)

popterror you make a pressing point. i think you may have an idea, however i think it may be one of those grandfather paradoxes. you know what that is, right?

It's fun to think about the possibilities, I guess...is a reason why. I think it is, anyway. Plus when people say belief in God is like believing in unicorns you can argue that unicorns probably exist.

I've never heard of a grandfather paradox, no.

Well, I understand the points you all are making on the mind being finite - but, it still has unlimited possiblities. Yes, it will cease at some point, but then again there is still consciousness existing in the vastness of the universes that continues on. Presuming that all consciousness is connected, that means that what is the "mind" (consciousness) still goes on in a sense. Therefore it has no end, and is infinite.

If the mind was finite wouldn't there come a point where there would be no more new ideas?

Still presuming that consciousness is connected.

Kind of like the point in which Walmarts' prices stop rising...hm.

    I agree with you bird.

I think, given the material the universe is comprised of...mind will always arise. And that's just speaking of mind as we know it...in its organic form. I don't think the scientific community is fully aware of other forms of intelligence that we don't normally recognize as being life forms. That is to say I think that all material is innately alive and possesses some form of mind. This is touched on in something called "emergent physics"...which I am only that familiar with.

When you factor that "life property" of the universe in with the fact that the matter that we're made of can never be destroyed...you see that you're eternally a part of this greater living "being".

Yeah...every atom of you will exist forever. And if all your memory is is a configuration of atoms...you'd think given eternity that this configuration would again take place... So at the moment of your death...whatever that configuration was...it will once again reconfigure. So think about that... You die...you don't experience the billions and trillions of years in the interim (or however long it would take)...so to you...you just keep on existing. Could be on a completely different planet. Kind've a cool thought.

What do you mean by everything is encoded in pi?
