So, I read my work's weekly newsletter today - and there is an announcement that the first Iris Scanning pictures are March 18th, 19th and 26th.

I heard rumours that we were going to have eyes scans when we move to the new location whenever we go into our work, but this is the first official notice I have seen.

I strongly disagree with getting my iris scanned. Only, I don't know much about the technology. I did a bit of research tonight, and found out that it's done with an infrared light that can actually detect reflections of the cornea. It's a digital photo, sure. That's what my newsletter says.

The iris is mapped and formatted into a digital file (something they call IrisCode) that serves as a reference in a database.

I have decided that I am going to fight this. It may be something that I lose my job over, but I don't think I coud live with myself if I didn't fight this. I don't have much time to fight it however. I plan to draw up a petition and make pamphlets to hand out to my co-workers, but I need some help and helpful input from some the finest.

If you guys have any formal or informal information, opinions, articles, documents, casses, accounts, spins, suggestions, advice, etc., please feel welcome to post your support against iris scanning here. I would very much appreciate your help.

    Thank you everyone.

It's called biometrics. We see all sorts of this Orwellian technology popping up all over the place, whether it's iris scanning, biometric thumb scanning, or cameras that can identify a person's face from a database of literally millions of people. They are even starting to talk about using technology that can literally read people's minds, so they might know who has "ill intent." It's part of this increasingly controlled society we entering into, where privacy will be a thing of the past. They are utilizing this technology at workplaces, airports, customs, in passports and driver's licenses, etc.. Pretty soon all Americans will have to have a national ID card which will be incorporated into the driver's licenses, which will feature biometrics in the form of iris scans and/or thumb scans. The same thing is being pushed in Canada and Mexico as well (not a surprise), and they are using the immigration issue to help push this through.

It is important that everyone take a stand against this.

My high school was sort of an alternative education school. it was quite relaxed. but anyway you had to do six hours (as usual) but you could do them anytime. example, if you came in at 8 you could leave at 2, came in at 10 leave at 4 etc

Anyway, we had to "sign in" and "out" with a little swipe card so they had on record for the ministry of education because they were worried about truancy. A few months after the school started the idea was proposed to get iris scanning.

They ended up not doing it because it would have been too expensive. but then they started talking about getting a thumb print scanner.

I had a little argument with the principal over it. I mean seriously, having to have our thumbs scanned whenever we go to or leave school?

That was in about 2004, and a few weeks ago I went for a visit and it still wasnt there. BUT the receptionist said they still wanted one.

Anyway, yes, I think you should fight it :)

Yeah, this is really bugging the shit out of me.

I work for a multi-national US based corporation, so there could be thousands upon thousands of people who will have access to my iris scan if I decide to follow through with it. Which I can't. I just can't do it.

I can't just isolate myself with this either, it's going to be best to work with others. I have already talked a bit with my co-workers to tell them how I feel. I know that I can't isolate myself with this if I'm serious about it. They'll just let me go, if I do.

My colleagues and I are not unionized. I don't know what the rules are, but even if we aren't organized we should have a level of labour protection for things like this.

I'm going to contact these guys tonight: http://www.seiu.ca/ They're a union most known for organizing janitors and security guards. They organized a strip club in California. But they should help me if I sincerely ask for some advice.

The shitty thing is, they have PR agents well trained and ready to counter any pamphlets, or efforts against said technology. Yes, you will convince a few people...but a few more who are on the fence, will be won over by the PR propaghanda.

I dealt with a PR dude in regards to paypass. I got all these faboulous ready made phrases spit back at me in a calm fashion about how they are a thing of the future and totally safe. Heard of paypass? They are little chips in your debit cards.

I'm not going to quit. They'll just have to fire me and write it down on a piece of paper why I was dismissed if they are dumb enough to fire me.

Because a vocal protest would accomplish about as much as none at all.

Walking up to your boss and telling him you're quitting to his face is much more effective when quitting a job for moral reasons. Pretty damn satusfying, too. I walked out on my telemarketing job the day I walked in and saw, "Greed is good" scrawled on the dry erase board. Told my boss I can't support that, and walked out.

Having the power in such a conversation is important. Also, "quit" looks a lot better on an application or resume than "fired."

I can leave whenever I am forced with an ultimatum, no problem. I would prefer to work something out and push the envelope. And if I cannot with my boss, I will find another job - not by choice really. Because I've been forced into a corner and they don't want to address my personal concerns.

Anyway, I think I have a shot at this. At least I think I may be able to work something out with my boss. Some people have already told my boss explicitly that they refuse to have their irides scanned. So I think I may be able to get some people motivated enough to ask questions at the very least.

    I am the rebel girl.

Well I wish you luck with your fight. However if it is a multi-national US based corporation your boss has no say in the matter or decision.

What she thinks is irrelevant. If she lets you and others slide on the companies security policy and gets caught she will loose her job.

I encourage you to educate others and to let your voices be heard.

I also strongly suggest you start updating your resume. You will likely be needing it soon if you really make a stand.

    Wish you the best.

My boss is female. And I'm hoping that I can work something out with her. We shall see.

Yeah, fuck that paypass shit. I just got my new debit card and thank god my bank doesn't do it. Does anyone even begin to realize with how easy it is for people to run around with those little scanners that rip all the info off of the magnetic strip, that paypass thing just opened a whole new gateway??? Are these companies REALLY that stupid? Plus, that's just step one on the way to being chipped and FUCK THAT. I've ranted before and I'll rant again, I will NOT be chipped and if I have the slightest inkling that they'll start doing that at hospitals with newborns, I will pop my kids out in the damn bathtub. Fuuuuuuuck that.

Why does it matter? There's no point in getting paranoid over something like that.. what would anyone do with your iris scan anyway? Morph themselves into a version of you and steal your life? This isn't the movies.. if anything it will just make your work safer by stopping dodgy people getting in the building.
