It's a ceremony in which religion and the government have invested interest. Religion; ensures you'll have offspring who will hopefully carry on your religious beliefs.

Government; ensures you'll get bogged down by joint bills such as a mortgage, car, etc which keeps you at bay and ensures that your money is tied up (which is exatly where they want it-in the banks). The married couple is the number one most important asset to the government. Could you imagine if no one got married and we all went around individually, saving our money and not leaving it in the bank to pay bills, not spending all that money on things for babies, children, credit for car loans, mortgages, etc. The government would be out billions of dollars annually if people didn't marry.
