Is white noise more effective if you use it so others don’t hear you?

White noise is inevitably followed by roaring silence.

I've used white noise programs to help me sleep, or else all I hear is my tinnitus ringing.

just put a note on the door "all consensual in here, move along please"
and who cares who hears you.
or go and do it in a forest.
Or research if there is a sex hotel you could go to

That reminds me of the clubs that play music so loud that it is impossible to chat to a girl.
The designers call them "grab and snog" nights.
It is hard to believe that these clubs assuming that getting down to business without wasting time chatting attracts customers. But it actually works. LOL

Whenever on buses or trains or planes or anywhere there is noise i don't want i put on my rather expensive Bose Noise Cancelling in ear buds.
These use a sort of ever so slight white noise system so i cannot hear that or any noisy kids or people around me.
I fire up my IPhone and then I use my subscribed to payed for at £10 a month Spotify on 320mps which is very high quality to listen to all my favourite music from 50s/60s/70s/80s and i am in my own world of heaven.
    Pure heaven.

Looking at your profile picture and reading your comments, I assume that you are not a city dweller, whereas we are in London. My Fulham building is on the flightpath into Heathrow and at this time of year, planes at FL10 are roaring over every 40 seconds for 16 hours a day, but I have become largely oblivious to them. Modern aircraft are a lot quieter, but in the past it was very didturbing, particularly Concorde, that would rattle glasses on the table. The problem was that with so much air traffic in a formation, everything has to run on final approach air lanes at the speed of the slowest and at that seed and altitude. concord had to use a lot of thrust to keep it from dropping like a stone.
Our home in Wimbledon is much quieter and we can hear little except the birds singing and the odd passing motorbike.

Working in the film industry, I was used to machinery running in the background, but the auditoriums were soundproofed, so I could adjust quite quickly. However when work called to popular music concerts, my head was pounding. On a call to one of the clubs that I mentioned, I got out of the building as if it was on fire and refused to work during operating hours.

I envy people who can enjoy a quiet tranquil life in the country. Jane's family home is heaven on earth, 20 minutes walk to the next building. LOL Ireland-Dunguaire-Castle.-County-Galway.jpg .

    Thanks for post Wil.
We live in Rhos On Sea which is off the North Sea Coast in North Wales.
Yes not noisy here at all and relatively tranquil.
But I lived in noisy Liverpool for 30 years was born there.
Then noisy Northampton, so now it is laid back and take it easy time me being retired.
But I still need my Bose noise cancellers while travelling.
Some people and their kids can be a noisy lot sometimes.:tired::smiley:

Try living under the flight path of fighter jets training. Things get really interesting when they crank on the afterburners. Oh, and white noise is more effective when you never notice it or never pay attention to it.

There are simple ways to seriously soundproof houses, such as hanging double sheets of 5/8 sheet rock, but nobody ever uses them. The whole construction industry is not known for their high tech brilliance, but they could easily manufacture panels that are cheap and make a huge difference. Sadly, people prefer to bitch about such things nonstop, than to pay extra for sound proofing. There's simply no accounting for taste, in a country where bankers never go to jail.

Their are parts of London where a real community atmosphere exists with a combination of younger people and families who have lived in the same house for generations. My family have owned our house in Fulham since 1887 when it cost £250. (valued a 2 million today).
However, the "bed sit" areas with a transient population, drop outs and drug deals on every street corner are like hell on earth.

Jane's family home in the picture is on the west coast or Ireland. so before we kept a car there, we regularly drove through your part of the world on our way to the Holyhead, Fishguard and Pembroke ferries. The overall journey took about 20 hours, so now we fly from Heathrow to Cork and drive to the west coast.

That tongue of yours will cut your throat if your not careful ‘I’!

Another reason I use my Bose noise cancelling in ear phones for is this.
Occasionally my Wife can snore a fair bit, and when she does I put my buds in my ears and I can’t hear a thing!
Except just a little soothing low level white noise.
Sure it is difficult to lay ones head at the side by ears on the pillow, but can be done with a bit of manoeuvring.
But of course if one sleeps on ones back there is no problem.

The buds feel fine in my ear, and it helps me drift off to sleep as well.

Would be good for someone with Tinnitus methinks.
As I think Irm mentioned about white noise earlier.
