Seems like the gratefull dead are a pretty popular musical group here at the hip forums. Ive never heard them and as such have no desire to listen to them. Ive only been listening to reggae for the past 3 years. Before that it was pretty much just Jimi Hendrix. When I find a musical style I like I stick with it, if it aint broke dont fix it.

If there was one song that encapsulates all that is the gratefull dead what would it be. I will download this song and try out this gratefull dead band ive heard so mucha bout.

I completely disagree. The dead were a band ahead of their time, but truckin is way overrated. If you want an accurate example of the dead at their peak try "eyes of the world" or "weather report suite" from a show in the 70's. I also have to disagree with soaringeagle's comment about jerry's soloing. I find it lyrical and inspired, alot like miles davis.

Download Cumberland Blues! And Box of Rain...and Viola Lee Blues!

But for me its really cumberland blues (live 72 ) that passes the message of what they are...

What if they are boring for some...they are the only band who can carry me through the pleasure shivers of music for minutes non stop...The shivers know what I mean?....

The Grateful Dead are fucking amazing. It's transcendent music. They are one of the handful of bands that never fail to raise my mood, chase away any fear I have, and make me feel love in sonic form. It's a feeling more than anything else, and very very few groups have ever created that feeling for me.

Honestly, the first time I heard the dead I thought they were pants. I was like, "this is it?" But after a couple weeks I'd start craving this song or that, and soon enough I was listening to the Dead non-stop for weeks on end. You can't explain it, you can't try to show someone why it works, it just feels right.

Listen to Uncle John's Band or Sugar Magnolia. No, listen to Roll Away the Dew, that might give you a glimpse. It makes me ecstatic.

I could listen to the Dead, Dylan, and Simon and Garfunkel the rest of my life and be perfectly content.

    Jerry!!

Well I listened to Truckin', not enough drum and bass for me. Im going to stick with Bob Marley, good melody, good message. I dont really get what the hype is over the Dead. Diffrent strokes I guess.

The Grateful Dead are a wonderful band. Don't judge them by
"truckin'", that's a rather terrible song compared to many of the other ones.

Same here. They almost never fail to pick me up.

I'm also terrribly fond of ballads and they have some fantastic storytelling songs. You don't see alot of that in today's music. They also have a variance is tune styles that can make it difficult to do what the OP is asking for. Some tunes are really rockish, some are more country/bluesgrass others are more pychedelic.

Also being more of a culture based on Live music over studio there's a good deal of soul from some of the songs that you're just not going to find from what's typically downloadable and if there is, it's usually poor quality as it was ripped from a bootleg.

The only tune that's coming to mind right now as a 'bass' driving song would be Turn on Your Love Light. Probably still not going to be your cup of tea though.

That is really a stupid thing to say. There is no comparison between Jerry and Barry Manilow.

    certainly there is
both would fall under the catagory of wuss rock.. (i dont like the term either, but its fitting)
as in uninspired, no energy background music..the kinda stuff u might play when you dont really wanna listen toit just have the noise in the background
    elevator music

typical dead experience..goto a show trippin outta your mind and have a great time due to drugs
buy alotta bootlegs and brainwash themselves by listenin to the same crap constantly untill thats the only thing that can inspire em
they get songs stuck in theyre head..boring songs..& insread of listenin to somethin good to get the borin crap outta theyre heads, they listen to the boring crap..lol

how many times have u had a song stuck in your head that just annoyed the crap outta you? something like barry manilow or lame ass boring somngs youd never listen to in a million years yet they get stuck in your head?
thats the dead and especialy gerry..but because ya had some drug induced revelation at a show ya think the borin stiff must be stuck in your head cause its good so u listen toit more..mores stuck in your head..but just cause u listen to only the dead and only hear the dead in ypitr head doesnt mean its not boring
in fact its the definition of boring
what songs stuck in your head right now? admit it..its the dead right?
if u answer the same day in and day out..isnt that boring?

But... Thats just my opinion...Whatever your opinion is... I'm cool with that.
