I Know this guy splits people like Marmite but I have to ask do you consider him a hero or a twat?!. My friend invited me to join the 'Jeremy Clarkson should be PM' group on Facebook. I was shocked that my friend would think I actually like the man but even more shocked to see that it has nearly 500,000 members!!!!. I Cannot fathom why people like him so much. I see comments such as 'He just says what he wants' , which would admirable if he said something worthwhile instead of the racist crap we have been treated to. I also hear people saying that he is only having a laugh and we are taking it too seriously - this echoes the comments people made in the late 70's and early 80's when describing comedians like Bernard Manning and Jim Davidson. His recent comments on the strikers were particularly shocking - as i'm sure he meant them to be so he stays in the news but when people say its just a laugh i wonder how could anyone think that people being taken outside and shot for striking be so funny?.
Jeremy Clarkson is a performer. That's all. He doesn't believe 90% of what he talks about and/or writes. Just for one example he lives on a farm, and was one of the best customers at a company I used to work for. An organic food company. Hardly the actions of a man who claims to be so anti environment. That is just one example. Now there can be a discussion around what is worse, saying something that you believe, or saying something just to portray a character to bring in viewership/readership. However, that is not my point here. My point is just that he is playing a character, and don't be fooled by that.
his tongue is the only muscle in his body that works harder than his heart. i don't see him as a bad person just a man with a 'free pass' regarding controversy. but then - what of britain for the british? in this day and age maybe he is saying things many of us live in fear of saying.
I'm not from the uk, but I love top gear. I think Clarkson is hilarious. Comedians can say whatever the fuck they want, if their intention is comedy. If something is meant to be funny, it's probably not also meant to be serious.
and we fear saying it because we know it is offensive and would make us look like racists?. He can say from the behind the safety of a TV screen and then say 'Ah, i'm just kidding folks!'. That's whats annoying about him. I Understand that maybe he is just playing a character but it is not like he is an actor playing a Basil Fawlty or David Brent, he is being him and saying 'This is what I beleive in because I am crazy!' I Don't think we can totally count out that he doesn't mean what he says either, he supports David Camerons right-wing ideas and if there are legions of fans out there who beleive what he says is right then surely he could really beleive it?.
as a presenter and a writer, i respect him, because he took a really incredibly dull run-of-the-mill car programme and made it into something that a lot of people can enjoy by realising that the boring stuff about car culture (cars) is much less entertaining than the real meat of car culture (middle aged men acting like 16 year olds) and saved the show from the brink of cancellation, making it one of the most popular flagship bbc programmes. as a person, however, i think he's an absolute arse. his views are offensive,he's probably the least funny and least likeable member of the three man-children (actually, thats a tie between him and hammond, what i'm trying to say is, james may is clearly the best) and he's a figurehead for cantankerous, mail-reading sods everywhere, saying all the things they're afraid of saying for them every sunday at 8 (and repeated on dave ad infinitum) and always relying on the tired excuse "its only a joke" which seems, to him at least, to be a euphamism for "i only say these things to guarantee my next book deal"
This is the biggest load of bollocks I've ever read on Hipforums. And for fuck's sake, I made it through some of J0rg's posts, and I've been in Real Kinky. Just saying what many of us may live in fear of saying.
TBF he has to tart it up, for the show has given him that reputation. He comes out with some corkers sometimes though.
