I never knew you But then who really did? If you were at all like me You managed to keep yourself hid A patchwork quilt of a life Memories embroidered On your soul So please forgive me For putting you in my song But the spirit she moves me In fact she pushes me along It's a patchwork quilt of a life Can't stop the river Just let it roll We were at Jones Beach When we got the word Saddest sound that I ever heard The bluest note that nobody could play Ravens sang with us that night on the stage Tears of sadness, tears of rage But nobody spoke, we all felt old And in the way So walk beside me Or above me, I don't know These days it sure seems I'm lost where ever I go God, how could you, I heard someone say And what do we do with our lives now anyway? Now that our North Star can no longer be found But there's a banjo moon in a tie-dyed sky Hippies dance and babies cry Church bells ring as a silver-haired angel look down And the blood of his music runs through the veins of our guitars Bright lights, Dark Star I never knew you But then who really did If you were at all like me You managed to keep yourself hid
Warren wrote it, it's "Patchwork Quilt", just listened to it in the pool today, its on this album: Warren Haynes Live At Bonnaroo Shane Handler Thursday, May 27, 2004 Although only in its second year at the time, the early sets on the main stage at the Bonnaroo festival have already come to symbolize brief moments of recovery and peace of mind. Whether still groggy from the prior evening/early morning festivities, or slowly hitting pre-game stride, it’s the set time that separates a lazy summer day from the beginning of another long day/night of music. Warren Haynes, in Manchester, Tennesse for his afternoon set with the Allman Brothers Band and numerous other sit-ins, would take the stage solo for an hour and fifteen minute set– just man, voice and acoustic guitar. The results – Live at Bonnaroo- a 16 song acoustic gem. Treating the audience as his morning congregation, the soulful slide player allowed for his fiery electric six string work to be dropped in favor of his muscular voice. But rather than covering the expected Allman Brothers Band, Gov’t Mule and blues songs; Haynes chose a radically diverse setlist of covers and originals. Songs by The Eagles (“Wasted Time“), U2 (“One“), Radiohead (“Lucky“), and the Grateful Dead (“Stella Blue“) surfaced in the humid noon time air. Although it ain’t easy taking emotional songs sung by Don Henley, Bono, Thom Yorke and Jerry Garcia, and fashioning them to sound legit; Haynes nails the familiar covers with soul-breathing tenderness. Mixed with some Gov’t Mule standards – “Falling Dow,” The Real Thing,” and “Beautifully Broken,” know for their electric prowess, the songs are justly stripped down, allowing them to become completely reinvented in the acoustic realm. Perhaps the most fitting to be laid down in such an intimate format, are the Haynes penned tunes, “I’ll Be the One,” and “Forevermore” – two tunes that prove that his words can stand proudly next to his gracious guitar notes and comforting, raspy vocals. The final number, a stirring rendition of “Soulshine” featuring a guest vocal spot from Vusi Mahlasela of South Africa, gives this now comforting tune, an even more significant light as the two trade verses effortlessly. Live at Bonnaroo, like the festival’s eclectic lineup, superbly captures the big stage amongst a revealing personal set by one of rocks greatest voices - Mr. Warren Haynes.
I don`t know... personally, it`s a little hard to feel sad over someone who created an atmosphere in which so many young kids discovered drugs. And as a musician, he was quite mediocre. I haven`t actually sat through any album besides that `Skeletons in the Closet` hits thing and some endlessly awful jam album my friend lent me, but I will say that none of their songs stand out as being terribly original or interesting. There were plenty of good bands coming out of that whole west Coast thing in the Sixties... why don`t people feel the same way about The Lovin` Spoonful? John Sebastian was a way better songwriter. Maybe it was the fact that he wrote the `Welcome Back Kotter` theme?
So you're judging an entire body of work on a "singles" collection released early in the band's life and a "jam" lent to you from a friend? Not only is your sample of Garcia's work just a wee bit minute, it misses his entire essence, IMO. Certainly The Grateful Dead had MUCH better output than "Skeletons"; ever considered actually listening to an album? Or perhaps a Dick's Picks live record? I understand that The Grateful Dead aren't everyone's cup of tea. However, I think the samples you've given and the reasoning are a bit misguided. Lovin' Spoonful were a good band, and I thought the "Welcome Back Kotter" theme was great; much better than the actual show. But I don't get the comparisons to Garcia at all. Two VERY different bands, with two VERY different songwriters.
ah misterrain, I love it when a person aquires an alias simply to state an opinion they are ashamed to admit with their primary ID. 30 posts in 12 months huh.......
