I feel really embarassed, because I'm here in the U.S with a student Visa, and I don't have a work authorization, and won't be able to get one until 2006. So my parents are supporting me, and this doesn't made me feel right. I mean, I'm 19! Even though they don't mind, I'd like to make my own money. I could work on the college campus legally, but I still don't have my social security card (I have to wait a month before I get it), and it's very hard to get a job on campus cause everyone wants to work there apparently.

So aside from baby-sitting, what kind of job could I get without an authorization? Maybe tutoring kids in French or Spanish? Any other ideas?

Penny, without being stupid, I can't really think of any job you could get. All I wanted to say is that if you're the chick in the red tainted pic - you really look gorgeous - do you have a link with more pics of you?

it sounds lame but maybe put an ad out for babysitting or pet sitting. Maybe a house sitter? Or, Dog walker, e-bay-er, make jewerly, sew clothing, What about a farmers market? Around here you you can work under the table I think and our states are next to each other. What about offering to help the elderly w/ chores? Driving them around to shop and helping them? What about teaching neighborhood kids other languages or tutoring them? Good luck! :) Where in Jersey are you btw?

HAHA, I would never leave my house with a stranger, but that's just me.

I think that's actually a really good idea. You can try to make some money doing the "buy & sell" thing. Some people really do make good money doing it.

I don't want to jump on her - in fact - I'd like her to be jumping over me, while I, smoke a cigar and have a funny Bugs Bunny swooping straw that goes to my beer...

Thanks for the ideas, actually the e-bay-ing sounds good to me, I might do that, I have quite a few things to get rid of. I guess I'll just do several things, e-bay, baby-sitting, pet-sitting I can't cause my boyfriend's dad is ultra allergic to any furry creature, and I'll some tutoring too... I'll manage, I guess.

do translation, teach french and spanish and/or try to get a job in a french mag. or paper, send them news from the US, or find thier branch in the US (marie claire or whatever)
I got friends who send literature news and do translations for the book review and literature magazine (mag.) that I work for. Some from south africa some from brussels and etc.
Also if you get a job in a mag. or smtng, in the position of a low-paid intern or whatever (try to compromise) also try taking photos. Maybe you can sell them. Having less money might force you to take more "creative" shots. Maybe you can do translations from Baudrillard or Derrida (they're quite popular nowadays).
Also working for press enriches your contacts, you may get to know more frenchman in your city and ward the sex trader fuckheads or drug dealers off.
You may also leave a note to your consulate's cultural attaché and ask them for help, or just tell them to keep you in mind when someone asks for (part time) translation or smthng.

Note: When writing the book "a moveable feast", hemingway also worked freelance and lived in poverty (in paris).

Those are really interesting ideas! I'd love to work for the press actually, and I'm a pretty good writter, too (so people tell me). Thanks a lot for the advice!

Hey Penny, glad you are ok.

My Spanish wife just got a job editing spanish translations of text books, with New York right there you have the publishing center of the entire country at your fingertips, I'd definitly look into that.
