Joe Satriani or Jimi Hendrix?

out of the two, who do you think is/was better? Jimi was good but Joe can play exactly like him and all the other greats.

 

never heard joe play exactly like jimi. never heard joe write songs like jimi. apples and oranges, sure, but jimi has a sweeter taste.

 

I agree that it's a difficult comparison. Different people in a different time. I've heard Joe say in several interviews Jimi is one of his primary influences. I find Joe a bit smoother and Jimi to have a bit more of a raw quality. Both have their merits, I think.

who the hell is satriani? i thought satchmo was luis armstrong. (was satriani armstrong's real name? if it was i'd be REAL curious, how he came to have been born with an italian sounding name. i'm not doubting that anything could be, i'd just be real curious, because it sounds like that would be a totally fascinating story in and of itself)

and people who don't understand the context of "what a wonderful world" really don't understand at all.

jimi was a great producer, far beyond his own music, and made a great deal more possible for a great deal many more people, then most people, who only know of his own music, have any idea.

both were giants and pioneers and did great and wonderful things, not just for music, but for everyone of every origen.

Now we all know that Hendrix is going to win this poll.

But for experienced guitarists Satriani is a god. He has much more technical talent the Hendrix ever did. All though Jimi had a better song writing ability but if it came down to who was the better guitarist (voted by actual excperienced guitarists) Satriani would win by a mile

Yeah, that's what I thought when I read the topic

I adore Hendrix, but I hardly know Satriani, so I should have maybe listened to both sides more before voting :S

But I do really love Hendrix.

I play guitar my self and i voted for Hendrix. I know Satriani were propably a better guitarist but this poll isn't only about guitar playing abilities. Hendrix was a mind expanding composer and remember talent without composing skills is bad.



And it is obvious that we all love Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix rocks only one Hendrix .

 

There's absolutely no comparison. Hendrix by a mile. Satch has written two or three songs that I can stand to listen to. Hendrix was lightyears ahead of his time, and really no one TO THIS DAY has matched his ferocity, power, and explosiveness. Satch does not at all have more technical ability than Hendrix ever did... I'm sure if Hendrix spent years in music school practicing scales and trying to play guitar as cleanly as humanly possible (which was not at all Hendrix's goals - he wanted to WAIL, not to play musical ballet), he would have all of the skills Satch has and way more. Hendrix plays with feeling, style, and power. Satch noodles around like a tool. Satch is obviously an exceptionally good guitarist and one of the best technical players of all time, but in terms of overall musicianship and quality of music produced, Hendrix is on an entirely different planet with the likes of people like... well, quite possibly no one as an electric guitarist.

 

Satriani is a far better musician, but hendrex is a way better guitar player.

Its like comparing a pioneer to a buisness man.

and honestly I really enjoy Satch's playing and think he's an innovative guitarist. as far as instrumental guitar players go he's probably my favorite because of his synthetic style.

 

Hmm, I guess I can kind of see where you're coming from, but I would tend to say the opposite. When I think of a musician, I think of someone who can play his instrument expressively and write good songs, which is what Hendrix did. When I think of guitarist, I tend to think of technical ability. But I'm thinking you meant that Hendrix's playing is more enjoyable (which it is), whereas Satriani has more knowledge of music (which he does). Is this close to the mark?

Hendrix never learned how to read music i think, yet he played a damn mean guitar, in one style.

Satriani can play many styles of guitar and probably more then one instrument. I say hendrix is better because he created a sound, satriani has a sound but its not as organic.

 

Extremely different people i actually feel guilty even voting on one over the other.
