So I'm definitely going to get dreads, but at first only 3 or 4 and maybe the whole head will follow not too far down the road. BUT I'm unsure of how I should maintain my lonely dreads.
I bought the neutrogena anti-residue shampoo, but I know I'm only supposed to wash every 3 days or so (the bottle says once a week actually), yet since my whole head won't be dreaded I'll still want to regularly wash the rest of my hair. Plus I'll still want to condition the rest of my hair every few days, and I know that's a big no no for dreads. SO what do I do?
Anyone else on here have just a few dreads and can help me out?
Should I somehow wrap my dreads up so they don't get soap on them when I don't want em to?

uh, why only a few dreads? and all I can picture is those few dreads steadily sucking in other hairs to form congos etc and you'll end up having like 3 fat ass dreads lol.

honestly, if you get a good shampoo, you can ween your hair off of conditioners. that might help. other than that I have no idea.... :S

I kept my bangs undreaded and wash them in the sink, don't know if that helps you at all....

I had 7 dreads for a couple weeks, Pain in the ass, so just did my whole head besides my bangs. It just didn't feel or look right to me.

I've seen a number of people with just a few dreads and it looks pretty sick. I have wondered what would happen to the rest of my hair, but it's super silky smooth and whatnot, so I feel as if it won't too readily get tangled up.

Why I want only a few (at first):
I'm quite fond of my hair and can see myself missing it a bit once dreaded
I don't have to do anything to my hair except brush it, so dreads, ironically, seem like they'll actually be higher maintenance for me
I want to see how the world - my job, my family, etc. - responds to them before I go all out

I know everyone may think I'm not ready for dreads, but I definitely am. Shit they're all I can think about :D

Then start neglecting your hair and start your journey.

Oy neglect is too natural for me! I'll be doing a nice neat sectioning for when my whole head gets done.

My best friend has had two small dreads on each side of her head for years, and her hair's doin' just fine. I'm thinkin' of doing one or two soon, as well! This is her: [IMG]

i had just a few odd dreads on my head for about a year. they never ate too much of the hair around them. when i conditioned my hair i just avoided the dreads. obviously some conditioner got on/in them but it didn't harm them much. i probably washed about once a week. i'm pretty sure i conditioned every time i washed too.
