back in the olden times [pre jesus] people redeemed their sins with sacrifices of lambs and stuff.

i guess god decided on a new strategy and sent his son which was sacrificed so you don't have to do anymore sacrifices.
now after jesus all you have to do is ask for forgiveness an accept jesus as your savior.

like the sacrifice to end the ritual of sacrifices.

and supposedly jesus is the only son?

so you could just blow up a mall, but claim to be a follower of jesus, and all would be good for you? in theory?

I never got what the big deal was.
I mean...I know at least 2 people that would have died for peoples' sins too.

Basically, the reason Jesus had to die for our sins was so that we could be forgiven and go to be with the Lord. Jesus is God in flesh (John 1:1,14; Col. 2:9) and only God can satisfy the Law requirements of a perfect life and perfect sacrifice that cleanses us of our sins.

    One possibility...

I used to think that - that someone could do the worst crimes, then accept Jesus on their death bed and all would be forgiven and they would go to Heaven. Made no sense.

The other night, I was talking with some friends about Christianity and we were trying to say that apparently we are made in Gods image - He has planned our entire lives so will know everything that we will do. So that would mean that those who kill etc were always destined to do so - God knew all along that they would.

    Interesting :)

no, the bible says that faith without works is dead.

So if you blew up a mall at some point, but truly repented, god would forgive you. But no, it can't be used as a get out of hell free card

You are talking about predestination which is a much bigger topic than this

Some have said that Jesus' sacrifice was an atonement of the sin of Adam. It is said that the God of the Bible is a God of both mercy and justice, so the view is that Jesus needed to sacrifice his perfect and sinless life in order so that everyone else can gain that same perfect life. Jesus did this by putting complete trust in God and defeating temptations and evils, but by doing so put him at risk to be killed by the people; The only way that he could remain true to his God was the refusal to follow mans ways of solving problems, but this lead to his death. It was this choice between following man or God that lead him to be handled by men accordingly.

This could have only been accomplished by someone born without original sin.

    what is original sin exactly?

and also, how come there's so much sin and suffering since jesus died on the cross? i thought the whole point was so that none of that would happen.

lol, i went to catholic school when i was younger, but i never really understood any of it.

Jesus died so that all of our sins would be forgiven; our sin is our fault through choice and the suffering is a test aparently - you stay with God throughout pain and suffering and then you get eternal life in Heaven. Jesus only eased suffering when He was on earth, now they don't seem to want to help.

Truthfully thats because Catholics set a bad example for Christians. Every time the word Catholic pops in my head I think of the mafia because thats really what Catholicism is. I dont want to turn this into a Catholic bashing thread cuz im not about that. So lets drop that subject.
God never promised sin and evil would just disappear but he gave us a way to escape hell. And that escape is faith in jesus. You just wait till the shit hits the fan and you have no one to help you accept god. If you trust jesus with your life ask and you shall receive. I don't know how to make it any simpler.

This is a complex theological question that doesn't really have a definitive answer. A lot of theories exist about the meaning of his 'dying for our sins.'

Yeah... I think there's a main theme which is the most importent part, but after that everyone has different answers about the rest of it. The main idea is the most importent part, then after that you can figgure out the technicalities

He was the son of God (according to the mythos). He didn't just choose the guy at random.
