Keith Olbermann announced his termination from MSNBC. The sudden announcement caught everyone by surprise. Lawrence O'Donnell will take over Olbermann's time slot. Olbermann's abrupt departure adds another liberal voice to those silenced over the past two years. Comcast which is due to take over NBC, claims it had nothing to do with Olbermann's ouster. Olbermann had been suspended indefinitely due to his unreported financial support of several candidates including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in Tucson January 8. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/21/keith-olbermann-countdown-over_n_812506.html
It's sad to see Keith go. I haven't watched him much lately. Guess I just got tired of his ranting endlessly like the other pundits. His "worst person" segments and the overly dramatic music turned me off the most. But his voice will be missed, and I'm pretty sure some other "liberal" media will snatch him up. What? There IS NO MORE LIBERAL MEDIA? Oh, ok, never mind...
Although Comcast claims it has no power to fire Keith since the takeover isn't complete yet, I can just see how it was an issue during discussions. How do we know Comcast didn't put the condition that Keith Olbermann be fired before the deal was sealed? That seems like something that would easily work its way into a merger. Perhaps when they suspended Keith earlier, it was not so much a message to Keith as to Comcast that proved their intent to get rid of him so the deal could go thru. Only the massive audience letter writing campaign saved Keith's job before, so now they have to fire him before the takeover can be completed. One less liberal voice. BTW Keith was the #1 personality on MSNBC. I actually like Lawrence O'Donnell's style. Much more subdued than Keith. But he has nowhere near the personality and passion that Keith has.
O'Donnel is alright, Scultz is fucking terrible. They should've just made Maddow's show 2 hours long.
Maddow is great, but 2 hours would be a bit much, plus she'd probably be pretty drunk by the end of it. I really don't like her pushing alcohol on her show every day. I'm sure there's a kickback from the liquor industry for her plugging...
She might just be an alcoholic, frankly considering how depressing the news is I'm surprised every news presenter isn't drunk 24/7
I'm surprised too, but for a different reason. I would think to LIE 24/7 about what is going on in the world would drive someone to drink.
Olberman had the most condescending vibe out of any televised media puppet. I should be celebrating, but I'm not. They'll replace him with another buffoon.
She isn't. If anything, she's a workaholic. I worked with her for five days in Baghdad, and we were up and running for more than 80 hours. She is constantly working--writing, researching, etc. She blew my mind.
Yeah, she's a typical "overachiever", pushing herself to her limits. She's still pretty young and can take it. However it will take a toll on her, esp. if she uses alcohol as a crutch to calm down. She really needs to use cannabis for that. It's not addictive.
I imediately thought of the dismissal of Juan Williams from NPR. His supervisor told him to see a psychiarist. Could the Olberman dismissal have anything to do with The Presidents recent call for greater civility in public discourse? I don't understand the suspension for political contributions? Its not like Olberman posed as a moderate or objective commentator. Like say Candy Crowley who famously stated that her political choices are her own private matter. Olberman is a prima donna behind the set whose ratings did not back up his superstar persona. Rachel Maddow has more viewers. We wont even speak here about other networks. I remember Olberman being bounced as a television sports reporter prior to his time at MSNBC.
That SUCKS! I watch MSNBC all day long (literally- I'm unemployed), and after Chris Matthews and Dylan Rattigen, Olbermann was my favorite because of his bluntness. He exposed all sorts of phonies. Who cares if he donated money to people he liked!
Well damn, maddow and internet news it is then... i would throw the tv off the roof if i could play original nintendo on my comp. monitor.
Some are encouraging Olbermann to go into politics. Possibly as senator from Connecticut. No not all US media is liberal, get a clue. Much more right wing media than ever before. Much of it is on radio and the Internet. How do you think they've been able to form the Tea Party? Fox didn't do it alone. There was a LOT of help from other media outlets. Don't forget all of the Conservative Christian media in the USA that has been influencing their followers for decades now. They've gotten much more high tech, although there is already a big backlash against them, esp. as Churches get their Karma as is preordained... The main point to remember is that the media in the US has a tremendous influence upon the public. Far more than any are willing to acknowledge publicly. Who do you think is keeping Sarah Palin's presidential hopes alive? She's a NOBODY, the public hates her, yet we still see her face on every media outlet in the entire country every fucking day! More pix of her than Obama in media outlets. If that's not a media conspiracy I don't know what is!
