This would have been a really awesome drive, through Alaska, across the Bering Strait and into Russia.
Here is a little bit about the idea i found on Ai.

    • During the height of the Cold War, shortly after the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962), President Kennedy and Soviet Premier Khrushchev explored symbolic gestures of détente. One bold idea was a massive infrastructure project: a bridge or tunnel spanning the Bering Strait between Alaska (USA) and Siberia (USSR, now Russia).
    • Purpose: It was envisioned as the "Kennedy-Khrushchev World Peace Bridge" to literally and figuratively connect the superpowers, promoting trade, travel, and peace. The proposal symbolized thawing relations, with potential for rail, road, and even pedestrian links across the ~55-mile strait.
