Hey everyone, we have a nice setup (which is also a work in progress) in Kentucky on a huge amount of land. There are only 3 of us at the moment (1 in 50's, 1 60, and another 22 years old *that's me*). We are currently looking for people to come and join us in communal living! We have tents and are working on some cabins, if you'd like to help us that'd be great! We have all the supplies/tools but it takes time and people. Also, we are working on a greenhouse and solar power gagets/generators. Or if you'd just like to come and hang out that'd be fine aswell. There's fishing, huge caves, hunting (everything hunted is used!), campfires, booze/partying (if that's what you like). 2 of us are Rainbows, and try to live that way. You will be free to do alot here. If you are looking for a job there are plenty of places in town looking for work, mostly resturants/bars and retail. But if you are skilled in a trade (construction/electric/HVAC/etc...) then there is also plenty of work for that, too. Anyway, I'm sure there's plenty more that you'd to know, so just ask. We'd love to hear from you and have you come stay with us (for however long you choose).
How much land? Flat / Hilly /Dead Tobacco farm land, "fresh cleared" or forest ready for planting (5-30 years?) Whats the water scenario? Creek, spring, ponds? Bedrock / Clay varieties? We love Pictures of things here. "All"? You have a Welder and a Smithy 3-in-1 or a real milling machine / drill press and a lathe laying around? Anvil, swages, dies? Or are we talking a B&D 3/8 chuck pos and a framing hammer or 5 with missing or 1/2 broken handles? (I dont mean it to sound rude, but experience has taught me to be specific.) This Rig makes my nipples hard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTvAL7ty53M"]STEAM ENGINE 12KW GENERATOR Solar Mirror Array Death Ray - YouTube Caves are fun, so I guess I can add at least "Hilly" to the first question. What would be the nearest Craigslist city to browse (Or relative Zipcode) Flea markets in the area for odds & ends? Scrap heaps hidden on the back 40 to play with for "Tinkering"? And welcome to HF. :cheers2:
pictures. pictures of the land, of the worksites, of the caves, fishing holes, wooded areas around, campsites, etc. show, rather than tell, please.
Hey Fritz! (and everyone else!), love that you have questions. Okay, so we're nestled on around 850 acres of land (some is ours, some not... but all shared). We have flat, hilly, foresty, etc... there are some little caves, and some masssiivvvely deep cave here (ones you can easily get lost in.). I do have picture, most defiletly. Just have to get the right cable to hook up to my computer. But I promise I'll get that on here as soon as possible. (seems like that's what most of you want). As for tools, we have basic power tools (couple differen elsctric saws, hammers, levels, nails, wood, drill, screws, squares... that's just off the top of my head). But yea, we also have neighbors who we're very close with who have more elaborate tools (up to back-hoes and bulldozers *we've used them before*). ... I'm glad 'The Rig' ,akes your nipples hard, haha. We are definetly open to all innovaative ideas and such.... we have a bunch of our own aswell. As far as your craigslist search, Somerset is right down the street, if thats not on there then Lexington is right past that... that'sgotta be on there. ....Hey 'Death', love to have you come fora stay!, if you could talk the wife into it, haha (that goes for all of you)! .... Pictureswill most definetl be on the way. ... In the meantime, we'd love to keep hearing from you guys!!! ... - Keith
what kind of community are you guys looking at putting together? what're your plans for the next 1,2,5 years? sorry for all the questions, but I'm curious about what you guys have in mind.
We are about 3 hours away from Somerset Ky. We would be interested in coming to stay for 3 or 4 days to check the place out and help out with any projects.
haha fritz you sure do ask some interesting questions. sounds nice. that's alot of acres. i've been needing to get out and go visit some places. maybe i'll stop by after i visit a different community in chattanooga.
Well, I like Building things so I try to get as good a feel for what I can find in a place in terms of raw materials and what sort of means on hand there are to work with them before I make decisions. Last time I "jumped the gun" didn't work out so well, with Age comes caution. :cheers2: P.S. Back Hoe's make my nipples hard too. Any thoughts on Aquaponics / Permaculture farming techniques? http://www.theinnovationdiaries.com/1355/aquaponics-systems/ Methane generation from the wastes or other biomass / animal or humanure? http://journeytoforever.org/biofuel_library/methane_bate.html And not that you need it down there unless of course you ARE on a burnt out tobacco farm,,, but have you looked into Terra Preta at all? Makes a nice potting soil or fill in case you're doing any Terraced gardening. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terra_preta Is there much in the way of fruit or nut trees or shrubs on the property already? (Serviceberries are yummy.) AND, does KY allow for "Personal consumption" Stills? (Small batch runs, not interested in being a Moonshiner per-se, but it's tasty in small doses / good for tinctures) 850 Acres?! <Warm fuzzies>
I did see 290 acres of land for sale in kentucky for 250,000.00 and it had some structures on it. here it is .. 290 acres in Kentucky Posted 8/30/2012 http://communities.ic.org/classifieds/ Community land for sale in south central Kentucky. 290 acres for $250,000. Located in Lake Cumberland area. 7 miles from Monticello, KY. Hilly with bottomland and ridge top. Mostly wooded with 2 acres cleared tillable bottom land used as a CSA for 4 years supplying 15 families with weekly vegetables. 2 large barns, 1 large hse with 3 bedrooms, 3 small cabins, 1 small hse 2 bedrooms and garage with well. Community started in early 1980 and functional till around 2000. Everyone has moved on cept 2 who live in small dwellings on adjoining 5 acres. Contact: Mary417-683-3610 Hey i would love to have that much but right now i have to keep improving what i do have. Not a lot of room on my 6 acres but being surounded by large farms makes it ok.. Here in pa all the acres seem to be in the 3k and up range and small parcels with a structure cost more plus the building codes in most counties are there to deal with. Yes kentucky has some great lands. I prefer the hilly land to the east though. ahhhh the Lonesome pine trail and all hey if i were without my farm and free from caregiving my 89 yr old mom i would be there in a minute. well maybe a day or so
I live in London KY probably not too far. Who knows. If shit hits the fan in my life and I need a place to escape to...
