So who do you think had the right idea about the first time you use cid? Leary with the idea of set and setting, calm and peaceful? or Kesey with the idea of multi media madness? I would go with Kesey, just cause thats how i am
man i say both. kesey had the right idea about dropping anywhere and everywhere, which is one way to expand your mind by gaining experience in different situations. leary on the other hand wanted a controlled setting and guides and everything, which isnt bad. i would do it either way.
they both had the right idea, it is just ab out the person and where ur comfortable, personally i love dropping cid anywhere, but doing it in a controlled peaceful environment is also good, depends on my mood really
Yeah, Leary was a doctor and was careful to make sure that dropping acid was a safe and enriching experience. I dont know a whole lot about Kesey, but from what I heard, as libertine said, he did'nt do a whole lot of good for certain people's opinions of Acid.
i would say that kesey's work had a lot more casualties. although the ideal was great, taking acid anytime and anywhere can be dangerous, especially in a society such as ours. i think what he didn't take into account during the crazy wild party/acid test years was that most american grown people weren't ready to just be free and live in the moment. kesey and leary were already well accomplished and very intelligent open minded people who were able to transcend the system. Leary i think understood this fact better and tried to use, in a sense, the system to lead them to the ideal both he and kesey shared - which was transcending the system. i know it makes no sense at first glance to say leary used the system, but he was a trained psychologist, and as far out as he got he remained a scientist throughout his life. by using the system, i mean to say he modeled his ideas into existing systems in order to get to the public. i mean books, manuals, guides, lectures. he realized people first needed something familiar to follow in order to get used to a less familiar reality. for example, a book of his called "exo psychology" is one of the most tripped out, mystical and even spiritual books i've ever read, but its all put in scientific terms. its subtitled " a manual on the use of the human nervous system as instructed by the manufacturers"
Agreed. Leary was much ahead of his time. Personally, both are icons--Kesey and Leary, but in an overall, I don't think Kesey should be even compared to Leary. Tim was a legend in the vein of Socrates or Aristotle, Kesey on the level of Abbie Hoffmann.
I'd say a little of both. Tim Leary preached enlightenment through psychadelics, while I agree they do help open doors.. I believe in a far more strict path to achieve real enlightenment. Its not something you can buy for $5 in the lot at a Phish show. What I like about Leary is that he provided people with a focus for their trip and I think thats very important much like setting your intention in meditation. I also like the idea of mind expansion through substances and the different intellectual perspectives they provide you with. With that being said I think Kesey's ideas were a little more rational. I've tripped numerous times and more often than not I do not drop in a "relaxed" set and setting. Its usually in the parking lot of a show, or at a rave.. or in other similar situations. But its the love, the ideas, the craziness, the experience good and bad, which I take away from each dose and I don't think it is as organic if its in a set setting. The way I see it look at both their ideas.. they're both really smart men, and then form your own idea and own experience. :^)
Not only did I vote for Leary, but I think Kesey had the WRONG method. It had more casualties, less enlightenment, a worse reputation, and made LSD look like an insanity pill. At least Leary tried to keep it legal by promoting the scientific, medical and spiritual benefits of it. I think Kesey is to blame for the bad rep it got. And all those who voted for Kesey are part of the reason it may never get legalized.
I've never really liked Kesey... his books are fun to read, but all he really did was get high and get other people high. Shit, I could do that too.
