He's the shit. He writes, directs, produces, and co-stars in all of his movies. He really loves what he does. It's cool.

I really like him...he seems really down-to-earth, does a few of his own webpages (the text anyhow), and just acts...like a normal guy. Not your average over the top celebrity by any means. Maybe not exactly a genius, but his stories are pretty damn entertaining. He cracks me up. Did you know, the only reason Bob is silent is because Smith can't remember his lines. Haha. But damn, he's good at getting the point across through physical gestures.

Not a genius by any standard. The movies are funny at times, I'll give you that... but they cannot possibly be compared to independent European cinema.

    I agree Lodog.

I saw Kevin Smith's standup on DVD and it gets very very repetetive... I couldn't even finish watching the whole thing.

Sorry Rubes... that was one of your more snobby comments....

I don't think Kevin smith qualifies as cinematic genius... but, I don't think for a second that he even pretends to be anything other than what he is - a Jersey boy who got lucky and made a couple of movies within a particular vein of humour (and drama I guess)...

Clerks was an original thought.. after that.. well, I enjoy his flicks cuz they remind me of people I know and people I grew up with. And you have to admit that his particular style of dialog can be found nowhere else.

If I'm looking for serious artful intellectual stimuli, I know not to go to Kevin smith... I can go to the "glorious european cinema" as Pavel suggests, or to perhaps one of my favorites, Darren Aronofsky...

How was that snobby? I just do not see him as a genius at all. I know he does not claim to be a genius... but some posters here do. I oppose them, not Kevin Smith.

Don't think he's a genius. Don't like his movies. Of course, that can be tied into the idiots I used to know that loved his movies but whatever.. I didnt enjoy the movies at all and thought they were not funny and very lame.

I liked Clerks and Jay and Silent Bob but HATED Dogma and Mallrats.

so that can't be genious or he would've had a better track record. It's strange how everyone has such diffent taste in his movies.

I wonder if high/not high would be a factor.
