Hello there everyone! First off I want to let you all know how much of an inspiration you have been to grow my hair out and finally get the locks i've wanted for oh so long. Anyway ... I have a few pics i'm going to attach to this and I have a few questions. On manday it will be 3 weeks since I first backcombed my hair, I used no wax. I'm starting to get ALOT of fly aways ... and alot of hair that isn't even dreaded at all. It seems like my hair is getting looser and not tighter! I know of the crotchet method, but I don't have the patience to do that. Is there any other option to fixing this mess? I still love them to death! I just wish they looked a little ... nicer. I'm really sorry, but I only found one pic of my hair on my computer, I thought I had more ... I have to run though .... Ill post some pics tomorrow morning when I get home ... :sunglasse
Since they are still young I think you should just leave them. Patience is the key. Maybe once they get a little older you could try the sewing method to get rid of loose hairs or you could just rebackcomb the ones coming undone. Mine were super tight until about 6months, then half of them just came out pretty much. Now I am at 1 year and 1.5 months and they are starting to knott back up. I can't wait for pictures!
congrats on the locks kyndveggie! i know you're going to love having them........it was the best hair decision that i've ever made when i deceided to go dready. as for the looseness and fly-aways........that's pretty normal. i've had mine for a few months now and they go through phases like that. some days they're super tight, others they are loose and all loopy. it's all part of the dread game. you're best bet is just to leave them be...let them do their own thing and have faith that they will dread up on their own. there are days when you're dreadies will be CRAZY and you'll wonder what the heck is going on up there but just ride it through and give them time. most of all enjoy your journey with dreads! good luck to you and i can't wait to see picies
Its completely normal for your dreads tro unravel to a point where they dont even look like dreads nany more... thats becasue at the moment they ARENT dreadlocks as such. they are back combed hair. its essential for them to lock that they go free and actually lock themselfs. all your doing is guiding... let the hair do the work Mine are 2 years old in feb, they still have a few fly aways and random bits but they are definatly dreadlocks.. i think they started being dreadlocks at 6 monts.
Thank you so much for all of your help. I don't feel like my hair is such a disaster anymore, i'm actually growing to like them ... ALOT. Here are some pics I took this morning ... I'm going to backcomb some more and try to make them a bit tighter ... I was wondering what everyones opinions were on putting rubber bands on the ends to prevent them from unraveling .. it seems like a good idea. Sorry if I posted the pics wrong, it's my first time attempting this.
neat locks! they're looking pretty good i would say no to rubber bands. your hair needs to move and rub against the other hairs to develop knots. i think that bands on the end would probably make the process take even longer. you could do the crochet method for tucking in ends but i really don't recommend it. pretty well the only thing that will make your ends knot it time
basically just strengthening what knittin_chick just said. one of the main reasons wax is bad is it prevents movemnt of hairs for knotting. ubber bands do exactly the same. lso with the crochet method all you are doing is tucking hairs in the dread so again its not knotting. They are looking quite good to be honest, you can see where they are keeping their sections and considering you hair is so short i think they are doing bloooooming well
Thank you so much knitin and fleassy! I really appriciate all your help. I backcombed them some more today and they are looking really good and tight. I just have trouble with the ends coming undone. Either way I love them.
