Hi there. I had my son 2 months ago and I still haven't started my period. Is this normal? I mean, I heard that it could take a while for breast-feeding moms, but I am bottle feeding. How long did it take for your's to start back up? Thanks.

    Hey Eryn!

With my son, i think my period came back when he was about 10-11 months old. i was still nursing though. i've heard of many women not getting their periods back until after they quite nursing, sometimes 2 or 3 years. Are you/did you nurse your second child?
Your babies are pretty close together, so it may just be that your body hasn't caught up yet. Your period hadn't returned with the first baby, then you became pregnant again, if you nursed this baby it could take a while your period to return.
i wouldn't be overly concerned yet, but i would schedule an annual exam with your ob/gyn. You need to keep yourself healthy for those babies. :)

    take it easy!

Ugh, me too. Not only did I bleed for almost an entire MONTH after they were born, but my periods started coming WAY early after that. for a while I was getting it every 3 weeks. I also breastfed, and in fact my youngest just stopped nursing about 6 months ago. (she turned 3 in Feb) My periods are just now starting to return to normal.

This varies between women. With 4 of my babies, my period returned between 5-6 months. After my 5th baby, my period returned by 3 months...go figure!

Enjoy this time...although, I did notice that my libido was down until my periods returned!

    Paz,

Wow, thanks, it's good to know that nothing is wrong with me! But here's another question: I can't start birth control until I et my period, can I? I got the BC patch from the doctor, but I don't think I can use it until I get my period...Am I right???

You can still get pregnant, even though you haven't started your period yet. Are you still BF? I don't know if the hormones can get into the milk or not. When I was BF, my dr. put me on a BC that only had one hormone (I don't know which one!) instead of the combination of the two. I don't what to give you any wrong info, so I'll hush now. But, I do know, that you can still get pregg without having started your period yet.

If you are NOT breastfeeding, you should still not start any hormonal BC until you have menstruated. (Did your doctor give you the patch with no instructions, that was not very responsible of him or her.)

While breastfeeding, only BC hormones with Progesterone only are acceptable. Estrogen can cause a drop in supply, in fact, even the progesterone only BC can, so we advise womyn who are BF, to 1)Don't use hormonal BC until after you have normally menstruated, 2)Keep an eye on your baby's behavior and wet diapers to make sure your supply is OK 3) Don't use an "unstoppable" form of BC like Depo Provera shot, if you have problems you are stuck for at least 3 months.

Talk to your doctor, he or she should have been very clear about how and when to start your BC patch, as well as given you good instructions on how to use it. You can also call a local Planned Parenthood, if your doctor won't help you. And if this is the case, I would find a new doctor. his or her responsibilty to you doesn't end at your 4 week post partum visit. He or she prescribed the Patch, he or she should have given your proper instuctions. For your own saftey. Putting hormones into your body isn't a decision to be taken lightly, and your doctor should be involved in your knowlege of the method and how you are using it.

In the meantime, there is nothing wrong with good old fashioned barrier methods. They won't hurt you, won't interfere with your body and are easy to get.

Hello Ladies, I finished BF my 10 mnth old son about 2 months ago and still haven't got my period back, but when I BF fed my daughter it came back before I had finished! Glad I came here tonight and read about the connection with libido and periods, my libido is nil at the moment I was starting to get a bit worried it may never return! I had Depo Prevera, it was a pain in the bum, literally!! I read that it affect libido too, but I came off it 5 months ago.
