Anybody have any suggestions? My toshiba labtop's screen will not turn on. The buttons turn green, like usual, and I can hear the computer running but the screen stays black. Of course, this had to happen 1 month have my service plan went void. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Something might be up with the graphics card.

There is a small button that is depressed when the screen is closed. Check if it is stuck down.

^^ Good Calls to both posts

pull the battery off and unplug it. then put it back together and power it up. do you see anything before the operating system tries to start?

Thanks all, I'll look into it! I was told if it was the graphics card, I believe, that it would be hefty to repiar, but maybe my leg was being pulled by Best Buy Salesman? ....self proclaimed computer idiot here...

most likely, if the graphics card fails in a laptop then it would be expensive to repair.

how new is this laptop and what are the specs? it may even be cheaper to buy a new one or a used one and swap the harddrive out.

also try booting a live linux CD and see if it boots and brings up the graphical screen. If it does it is not your graphics card it is software.

    Peace, Cricket

It just had it's 2 year b-day. I had my mom, who sorta knows about computers, try to hook it up to another monitor to no avail.

Anybody know any good deals on notebooks? This really sucks. I've lost ALL my music.

Graphics cards can cost a chunk, but if the Geek Squad quoted you a price, ignore it. Trust me, I work for one of their partner companies and have to deal with these guys on a daily basis- they're nice enough people, but they rarely know what they're talking about (save the appliance repair people, who are usually very good). Best Buy is notorious for not treating their employees well and not training them nearly enough. Don't get me started about how little they know about their own company's policies...

Anyway, my suggestion is that if it does turn out to be the graphics card, look for the price online.

I have the same problem with my Toshiba. What I do if first make sure the battery power is at full. So charge it up it its not at 100%. Then I make sure the power is completly off (hold the power button until the power light shuts off) after that I take out my battery, wait 30 seconds to one minute, return the battery and turn it on again. So far its worked every time, but its only happened twice.

Yo, I totally didn't reread this thread. Saw a new post, and thought the idea was new. I think we did try and test out the battery and what not, but my brain doesn't hold things in for long. Anyways, the computer is in some far away landfill, and I have a new puter...

The moral of the story is: I didn't ignore your advice, I just forgot I already tried it. :)
