I'm not sure where to post this, so feel free to move it. I have endured the Public Education system at it's best. I have been told that I would never amount to anything, that I would grow up as a failure and end up on welfare. Those are EXACT words said by the teachers. I was also suspended in 6th grade for disrupting class. How? Oh, well some kid trashcanned me before class started of course. All through school I have fought for what is right for me in the school (EG: A different education plan, etc.) In first grade I was diagnosed with ADHD and Dysgraphia, so this naturally made schooling very hard for me, but I never failed a grade. Ever. They even decided to dip into my social and home life. Telling my girlfriend's parents that I was a "Horrible Influence". My mother was so stressed with my schooling that she had a Stress Induced Panic Attack last June. Thanks to the PES, I can't function properly in society. I am damaged socially, mentally, and physically (Self-Mutilation). This is why I will not allow my children to participate in public education, but I will still grant them the social freedom and go out and explore. (Second time typing all of this, due to a computer failure.) Any questions? ask.
Thank you! There's alot more to this story, but I'm sure nobody wants to hear about a kid failing school.
No peace, I agree. Public education is a failure and schools should be privatized for more personalized academics and less wasteful spending. In converse though, you shouldn't be cutting yourself. It's not good for you physically or mentally. Smoke some weed or something. Also, Welcome to Hipforums!
Thanks for the support STP. I don't cut anymore, that was around 8-9th grade. And I already puff the cheeba. I'm happy to see someone with the same views on Public Education.
But, I have learned one thing from the Public Education System. Words, they are all different, and have different meanings. They are powerful weapons that must only be used for the better. To use them for evil is inhuman and defies everything we stand for today.
Good man! that's great to hear. Also, as a writer I def hear you on words being a powerful weapon. However, to some degree the majority doesn't want to listen the first time they hear it.
The right message is typically ignored by the majority. Don't forget Americans hate the Iraq war NOW, see how they felt in 2002-2003.
Jo, I've already proved them wrong by doing what they said was impossible for me. And I've had a job since age 15.
I know what you mean, don't worry though, they fucked over the "smart kids" too. We were the examples. Good grades, involved, employed, yada, yada, yada. We knew more than the average high school students. No one ever acknowledged it though. Except for when you got to your junior year and you took your ACT, of course. But even then, I almost got in trouble because I got up and walked to the dean's office that was in the library with the testers and shut her door because she was screaming at some kid for being late. We got really upset when the district decided they were going to involuntarily transfer some of my schools best, most involved, caring teachers, for the other school's shitty teachers. These were teachers that ran some of the school's biggest clubs, teams, and events. Not to mention, some of them were the whole teachers we had were the only ones in the building that could teach certain classes. They were taking those teachers away from us and not giving us teachers from the other school to still cover those classes. These teachers choose to work there, some living closer to the other school even. We held a silent protest, to get the lady in charge to talk to us after several attempts at speaking at the meetings, and she showed up. She basically told us we had no business saying anything about it, we're just dumb kids, blah, blah, blah. A dean told us to go back to class in front of a news camera and she immediately responded with a "not in front of the camera!" I went on the news and talked about it. She refused to listen to anything we had to say or answer our questions directly. When I graduated, I refused to shake her hand on stage and almost lost my diploma over it. My stepdad and his best friend recently got their GED's (their in their late fourties), and I let her have a pice of my mind afterward. I got more of an applause than when she was on stage. Lol. Don't even get me started on their new uniforms either, completely rediculous.
I have had the PS do the same to my kids. At first I actually listened as though they were expert. Then I realized that I know more than they do. I rejected their analysis and used the system for what it was intended....reading, writing, math, science, social studies, etc. Being cynical about education is not useful, but I do believe that a quota of "conditions" is necessary so that a school, or district, can be awarded more money for programs.
Welcome to HF! Yes, the PES is fucked up royally, but you seem to have a great head on your shoulders. You'll do great in life, as long as you stay true to yourself.
It's bad. No doubt. I thought about home schooling, enrolled my child actually. Unfortunately we have to eat and I have to work and school is a cheaper alternative to daycare. And, as bad as it is, they just might learn something while they are there. I do a lot of damage control. Between my husband and I there's three bachelor's degrees and a master's degree. Our child is beyond his peers thank goodness so school is more of a social aspect for them. I feel very sorry for the students who don't have that benefit. Who are like I was when I was a kid with parents who were about like everyone else. No college degree, worked a lot...school was important for me then to get a better education. I didn't make good grades, even though I was a student who was extremely intelligent. It's hard to make good grades when you have really bad teachers, no structure and drama between cliques as well as being a small town and not having the right last name. But, the thing is I was an average student, not spectacular...and I got out and now when I go back home I'm proud. Nobody can ever take that away. If I can do it, anyone can no matter what you went through in school. Problem with schools is it's political. They rely on money, and politicians use this for their advantage. It's a constant struggle to keep public schools secular and to keep those stupid fundamentalists in my state out of the damn science classroom! I have a superintendent who is a creationist loon. We've had our words, luckily he's not been successful in his plans to insert creation into our science class. I also had a discussion about how the local Baptist church was at our back to school bash at the elementary school handing out rulers from their booth with their hotline for "If you feel alone..god is a phone call away". Yeah, my five year old is really going to know what that number is and if he calls, I dare someone try to get into his head. Of course it was to advertise their afterschool program. Which brings me to another issue. The only free afterschool program is offered by the Baptist church. They will even arrange for a church bus to come to the school after school and put the kids on it. It's a great thing for parents who work and can't afford daycare. But, it's sad in that it's also the only option and they know this. Sadly nobody has the funds to offer a free after school program except for this church, as they have many members who are willing to shell out money to provide for such a service. I hate small town America. And to beat it all, the school says they can't stop them from advertising at their bashes and handing out propaganda. Since it's a bash, not during school hours and children are with their parents and not alone. I don't trust them though, I keep a watchful eye on that school and they are aware too. They walk on eggshells when I show up.
Exactly. That's what I do. The thing is, we are smart. Not trying to toot my own horn or anything. But the general public isn't so smart. They send their kids off to school not knowing what is being taught to them, or what isn't being taught for that matter. And sadly, many of the people in the USA don't know enough to teach their kids what they need to know. When our schools are behind other first world countries, and even some third world countries in math and science can we expect the parents to know either? Go to a store, give a cashier money for your transaction, let them type it in, then tell them "wait, I have some change let me take this back" and let them have to count money back to you that's not what was originally computed. Most of the time they can't. Or they get mixed up. We are a nation of stupidity!
