A while ago I sent a letter to Christopher Shays encouraging him to support the Hinchey/Rohrabacher amendment. This is the reply I got a few days ago.

    Dear Alyssa:

Thank you for your email expressing support for the Hinchey/Rohrabacher amendment to H.R. 2862, the Science, State, Justice, Commerce, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. I appreciate you taking the time to contact my office.

On June 15, 2005, I voted against an amendment offered by Representative Maurice Hinchey to H.R. 2862 which would prohibit the Justice Department from preventing the States of Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, or Washington from implementing medical marijuana laws. I opposed this amendment, which failed by a vote of 161 to 264, because it would prevent the Justice Department from enforcing federal law.

While the medical use of marijuana may have its benefits, the fact is, recreational use of marijuana is not benign. Smoked marijuana damages the brain, heart, lungs and immune system. It impairs learning and interferes with memory, perception and judgment. Smoked marijuana contains cancer-causing compounds and has been implicated in a high percentage of automobile crashes and workplace accidents. By legalizing the medical use of marijuana we would be opening the door to easier production and accessibility for others.

Please do not hesitate to contact my office again. Because mail is delayed by Anthrax screening, e-mails, phone calls, faxes, and in-person visits are the most effective ways to communicate with my office. I also have recently begun a periodic e-newsletter and would be happy to send it to you. To request this e-newsletter, and for other information, please visit my website at www.house.gov/shays.

    Sincerely,

    Christopher Shays
    Member of Congress

I like how he said "the fact is"

There are no credible studies that support the theory that Marijuana damages the brain or immune system.

He talks facts, I'd really suggest you reply and ask for some actual studies to back up his claims.

In addition, he seems to oppose the use of Marijuana simply because of it's negative health effects. (or at least that's what he is hiding behind)

If this is the case, ask him why other harmful substances are allowed to be consumed by the general public but not Marijuana. Talk about the millions that have died from tobacco, yet it is still legal. Ask him if he would support the illegalization of Tobacco and Alcohol.

I think writing to your congress person is the best way for normal everyday people to fight the various anti-marijuana legislation. I really congratulate you for doing this and you have the support of everyone at Hip-forums I'm sure!

Yeah, I've seen pretty much the same exact reply from at least 5 different congress people. But it's still a good idea to call their bull.
