Hi everyone, Ive found what i am 99% sure are liberty caps. Does anyone know if there are any very similar looking mushrooms that can grow along side the liberty caps that are poisonous? Im going to get my friend to check them out anyway before trying them but knowing the answer to this would get rid of some anxiety and probably make the trip better. Ive looked on erowid.org and some of the pictures on there look different for the same typr of mushroom. Thanks for reading, hope you can help. R.
you can't judge by appearance alone. you'll need to thoroughly check the stipe, the veil, the underside of the cap, and take a sporeprint. get a quality ID guide, you can't tell from comparing it to pictures. even better, get a mycologist or at least someone who KNOWS what they're doing to confirm them for you. but mushroom hunting is a potentially deadly hobby.
Hi Ripple, If you can post a pic of a fresh sample of what you have picked then I will be happy to tell you if I think it is a liberty cap. Although best bet is to go picking with someone that knows. There aren't any shrooms i know of that look like liberty caps and are dangerous but im no mycologist and nor are you so as nesta said...be careful with such things. www.erowid.org will have many pics of libs aswell. Mmelody
i would for sure get some in depth guides on mushrooms because if they aren't the right kind it will lead to a very painful death...
from my own research for picking shrooms there are no poisonous shrooms similar to libs in the british isles, but I'd still get an experienced picker to go with you the first couple of times
It's hard to mix up liberty caps with other shrooms. If you have studied the photos well, you shouldn't have problems identifying them.
Thanks for the responses everyone, going to try and post a pic soon but have been assured by friend they are liberty caps! Let the fun begin R.
judging simply from photographs alone, i'd say that my area has a lot of mushrooms growing in it that LOOK like liberty caps, but i have NEVER EVER heard ANYONE report them growing in my area, and no resources i can find online would suggest my area is a suitable habitat for them. as far as i know, and as far as most people seem to know, they do not grow here. so you may or may not have mushrooms like i'm talking about growing around you...maybe in your area there ARENT any mushrooms that look similar to liberty caps...but there are some that exist. i just dont think it's entirely safe to judge by photos alone, no matter how sure of it you are.
In the british Isles there are mushroms that an in experienced picker could think might be liberty caps..the good thing is I personally dont know that any of thoseare poisonous. Your best bet is to hook up with someone that knows. mMELODY

Thanks everyone who replied to my post. Thought I'd let you all know that they definately were liberty caps!
