My husband looooves shrubby plants, and has been pining for some sort of a hedge across the front of our yard. We live on a very busy corner and it's rather like being in a fishbowl to sit in our front yard most days. When my mom found out, she invited us to come dig up as many lilac suckers as we could fit into our car. So today, we did... this! Isn't he just the sweetest thing? He is SOOO happy to have our hedge in & started!!!
And you are doing the birds a favour too. We have put in a native plant hedge to encourage wildlife on one side of the garden with yew, blackthorn, juniper, elder, alder and holly We also planted willow to weave into a living play house/den for Ree! It will take a few years - but this is more than veggies!
You do realize those suckers may not bloom for up to six years, depending on what age the suckers were that you dug. It's still worth the effort, but don't expect a hedge in full bloom for a few years.
lol... Yes, I realize they'll take some time. My mom planted these lilacs in her yard when I was in my preteens and they're just now big enough to produce suckers. Three of these are 3-4 years old, but most of them are first-year growths. We're going to have to transplant the whole hedge when we move in 3-4 years also. We're praying that they'll be large enough to make an impact in our new yard by then. love, mom
My parents planted a bunch of lilac bushes a couple of years ago. They're blooming nicely this year. I enjoy having them all around our yard, but I'm SO allergic to them. Here's what ours look like this year (so far):
