Hi - my name is Angie and I'm currently doing a research paper on our public policies and the trans community. I have a very brief survey (will take 10 minutes top) asking about some experiences, etc. This is totally anonymous and PLEASE do not be offended by me asking about this, I'm doing this as a means to spread awareness of the injustices of our system in the treatment/understanding of the trans community (after seeing the terrible things my mtf cousin went through, I started looking into this topic more) and I completely respect privacy and the sensitivity of this topic. thanks for your time, if you'd like to speak with me you can msg me here angie The survey is below, if you would like to answer if but are not comfortable answering certain questions that is totally fine! 1) Are you transgender, transsexual, a cross-dresser, or gender non-conforming? 2) Please explain the gender you were born with versus what you identify as now: 3) Were you able to openly discuss this with friends and family before you started making a transition? All Most Some None 4) Do your current friends, coworkers, etc. know about your transformation? All Most Some None 5) Do you feel as though the term “trans” has a: a) negative connotation to the public b) positive connotation to the public c) is neutral 6) Do you feel supported by those around you in regards to your sexuality? Yes No 7) Do you feel as though our social structure allows for equal treatment towards trans individuals? Yes No 8) Have you ever felt mistreated due to your trans identity? No Yes – if yes, please give an example of an experience that made you feel mistreated: 9) Do you feel the portrayal of the trans community in media is accurate? Yes No 10) Do you feel the overall tolerance towards the trans community is: a) getting better b) staying the same c) getting worse 11) Do you feel our public policies a) show a bias against the trans community b) show support towards the trans community c) are neutral 12) If you could change any of our public policies that would better support the trans community, what would it be any why? 13) Have you ever been involved in our criminal justice system? If yes, can you please explain your experience and any role your gender or sexuality may have had in how you were treated. 14) Are you active in any LGBTQ groups? No Yes – if yes, why? (select all that apply) Social Political Personal support Other (explain) ____________________________ 15) What is your age group? a) under 18 b) 18-24 c) 25-31 d) 32-43 e) 44-59 f) 60 or older 16) What is your race? a) Caucasian b) African American c) Hispanic d) Asian e) Indian f) Multi-race g) Other 14) Do you have any additional comments that would be relevant about the trans identity and our society?
Okay, I'll play. 1) I identify as transsexual, I used to use transgender, however with my decision to forgo having SRS (non-op) I dropped that. 2) Born boy, figured out at about thirteen - fourteen I was feminine, crossdressed in school, started transforming myself physical at nineteen. 3) Yes to all, at various stages to various people. Lots of family support, which I understand is somewhat unusual. 4) Be kind of hard to hide from anyone whose known me more than a few years, I don't automatically tell everyone I meet. It doesn't alway come up. Not conceiling it though. 5) c) is neutral, it a descriptive term to me. I use the word "tranzee" to describe myself all the time. 6) For the most part, people need to make up their own minds, that's their right. 7) That's a tough one, I live in a tolerant city, others don't. 8) Mistreated? Surprisingly mostly from gay men, and not the straight society around me. 9) Easy answer, no. We're still at best a curiousity. 10) a) getting better 11) a) show a bias against the trans community 12) Personally I would want "gender neutral" laws, as opposed to special laws and special protections. Which only single us out, and separate us from the rest of society. 14) Loosey attached, but not active. 15)18-24 16) Hispanic. .
Interesting questions. 1. Not sure - Have been crossdressing since I was very young, but as male as I am I consider myself female so you can tack the label on it. 2. Born male, but have always had the nurturing attitude and have always loved the concepts usually attributed to women (sewing, cooking, etc) 3. Still haven't started a transition (so I guess that puts me in the Crossdresser category) and no I was not able to talk to very many people about it until my current wife. 4. Current friends or co-workers do not know about it, and for the most part I do not believe they would understand. 5. I think the term "Trans" just puts another title on something that is a very personal concept, but I guess the medical profession has to identify it with some sort of label so it can be treated(?). That in itself gives the title a negative conotation as many believe it needs to be treated by the medical (or mental) profession. Most health care services do not cover it so it is handled as a mental disorder. 6. No I don't feel supported by most (my wife is the exception) since most of the people I know are more homphobic then they will admit to. 7. I don't think our society feels inclined to do anything but fear and loath us wether we admit to being trans or just gay, so no there is not now nor will there be in the future equal treatment from most people. People do not want to understand who or what we are. 8. Since I have only gone outside and interacted with people a few times I will say no I have not been mistreated directly, but the fact that I (and many others) do not feel comfortable being seen in public as we wish to be is a form of mistreatment. You decide. 9. Media has changed over the years. Shows like Maury have given way to documentaries that depict the difficulties of this type of transformation so I will say that the media tends to put whatever spin on it that suits the purpose of the information being presented. So no, but I do not think the portrayal of a lot of media items is accurate. 10. I believe more people are becoming more tolerant with the gay / lesbian / trans community, but we still have a VERY loong way to go. 11. I do not believe the policies are neutral so I will say more negative than positive. Knowledge is power - give it time. 12. If I could change any policies it would be to make "treatment" more readily available via health care and more reasonably priced. 13. Yes I have been involved with our criminal justice system, but mostly in my birth gender capacity so I will say sexuality did not play into it other than to say it was handled in a manly fashion. 14. No but I hope to find a support group near where I live and begin attending meets. 15. I am 61 years old 16. Caucasian 17. Additional comments. I have been looking into this more firmly over the past few years, I will say that my youth was hingered a great deal by my (for lack of a better word) condition. the 1950's had no idea what transgender was - everyone was gay (or queer as it was called then). the 60's and 70's were a bit more opn minded, but not a lot and some of that time I was in the military. Needless to say I was not crossdressing during that time. We did not have the outlets back then that are available now and tolerance was truely not available back then. I have had to break decades of conditioning to be able to feel comfortable with who I am and what I feel. I would also like to say that the medical profession does not do us much justice either. $150.00 per hour is a ridiculous fee to charge for mental (or any other medical) treatment for that matter. Pricing makes getting help very difficult. Good luck with your survey!

Not to any degree - but the police can show bias everywhere in my experience. 14) Are you active in any LGBTQ groups? No...this, but I support them in other ways. Yes – if yes, why? (select all that apply) Social Political Personal support Other (explain) ____________________________ 15) What is your age group? a) under 18 b) 18-24...this. c) 25-31 d) 32-43 e) 44-59 f) 60 or older 16) What is your race? a) Caucasian....this. b) African American c) Hispanic d) Asian e) Indian f) Multi-race g) Other 14) Do you have any additional comments that would be relevant about the trans identity and our society?....I think it needs to be treated with more flexibility of thought and less labelling - ie, not expecting all trans girls to want the full op, for instance - that is very much a bias in a lot of people. Needs less defensiveness about the use of politically correct terms, too - that can become absurd.
