I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet. On April 7th the 2005 Drugs Act was given Royal assent as part of a raft of new legislation rushed through before Parliament was suspended for the election. The Act includes a clause specifying that

"Fungus (of any kind) which contains psilocin or an ester of psilocin"

...is now illegal. This includes fresh mushrooms - they are now considered class A drugs.

I can't seem to find any mention of when this legislation will actually come into force, but the law has been passed.

oh they'll have a hard time banning something that grows completely naturally all over britain, from moutains and hills, to parks, gardens and childrens play areas...

who cares anyway, just adds to the fun of it, we all know their lieing cock suckers, let them ban them, i'll still take them

The ban, which makes the importation, possession or sale of magic mushrooms pun ishable by a life sentence,

life sentence thats why you should care they will convict someone of this and they will do time

i like the fact that they think making it illegal will make a blind bit of difference to people actually eating them

I think it probably will make a differance myself. Obviously not to those who know where to pick them in the wild. But the kids who haven't a clue are gonna be screwed.

My 15 year old cousin is able to get served shrooms, I dare not think about just how young certain customers may be. But I do think many will be simply to lazy about what to look for, where and at what time of year. So the mushroom hysteria is sure to dwindle.

Think I'll finally have to invest in a kit, as I'm quite a lazy kid myself.

Picking wild mushrooms can also be quite dangerous if you are inexperienced because of the prevalence of highly toxic fungi and difficulties identifying psilocin mushrooms.

For anyone that 'may' want to look for magic mushrooms in britain, there is generally one key species...

"Liberty Cap" (Psilocybe semilanceata) has a long stem, with bluey-green base and a dome shaped cap which forms a 'nipple shape' which turns from lightish grey to a dark brown tip, going completely dark brown when dried. It has purplish-black gills and is commonly found on heath, common land and amenity grass areas. It is found late summer to early autumn and is readily distinguishable from most fungi.

However with all fungi, be careful, if it grows near a pile of dung or on it, its a poisonous species which should not be touched!

*This information is regarded for novelty purposes only ;) *

Actually, i know its a poison, i'm not that silly, i like to think i am quite good at identifying fungi and the like (i'm currently studying Conservation at uni). It is just a matter of scale, whilst Psilocybin is a poison it does have different strengths, meaning that whilst Liberty caps are still poisinous they are not gonna do u much physical damage, unlike say Fly agaric (and other agaric species) that are so strong they can seriously cause severe health problems.

I'm not advocating that people should take them because they trip u out, and they will do you no harm. I alone know that there can be problems physically or mentally with any drug and that you have to be sure that you know the risks and don't just take them either because ur bored or forced into it. I know your into the whole shamanism use for them, but i kinda believe that any use, to experience a different view of the world or to even just gain a bit of tranquility is an equally reasonable use for them.

So, you don't mind that you're now committing an offence punishable with life imprisonment by picking mushrooms?

Yesterday a Home Office spokeswoman said people would not be considered to have committed an offence merely for having magic mushrooms growing on their land.

excelent.. so bring out the growkits :)

this is a stupid law... terrence mckenna is turning is his grave...

just one step closer to the death of the world, caused by the overinflation of masculine ego. god dammit... these people should listen to what has to be said before doing ridiculous things like this...

" oh well.. there goes the planet"

and if anyone can tell me what film that last quote is from.. you win a prize

It's just really to stamp down on what the government see as Head Shops taking the piss out of a loop hole in the law...

Governments hate to look stupid hence the clamp down... mind you, you'd think they' have got used to it by now:p

It is possible to get mushrooms growing in your garden where there weren't any before... just takes a gentle hand in starting them off.

i totally agree with you there claire.. on the stair.. with the hair.. like a bare.. that went where?... over there... over there?... yeah...

i totally blame camden town for this law.. it was fine when it was.. secluded head shops down little alleys.. but know.. some one saw a chance to make some money and fucked us all in the ear..

selling something people know is a drug under there noses because of a loop hole is asking for trouble...
well i hope those camden shroom sellers made there millions coz they really pissed me off.

Yet another stupid law being introduced by the government.

Hmm...let's illegalise magic mushrooms but de-classify marijuana (not that I think marijuana shouldn't be de-classified but, you see the contradiction?). Let's waste lots or police time and money by having them keep an eye on people in case they may be picking the offending mushrooms. Arrest a group of friends suspected of picking liberty caps when in fact they were collecting perfectly legal non-hallucinogenic mushrooms for a school or college project, or for their supper! Only to discover after performing the relevant tests on their 'stash' that it was nothing of the sort.

Grrrr....I'm beginning to dislike New Labour more and more by the day.

Well at least we can still drink... ahhh alcohol.... makes us dull and stupid so we don't care about the mess they are making of the foreign policy...

    Fuckwits...

Ohhhh... this just about sums up the lunacy... this is from Drugscope which is one of the sites tht I get my info from for teaching drugs stuff...

Apparently if they grew on land owned by the Queen or the Church of England, it would count as them possessing a class A drug, although they wouldn't be prosecuted. I don't think anyone would be for it growing wild on their land, more of an effort to crack down on the legal sale of shrooms in shops. It was nice while it lasted, but it's a pity they had such a big boom of that, the people who were making so much money out of it were the people who got it all shut down....

No one has guessed it yet. I don't have a clue which film it's from either. What's the prize?
