Hi, I'm new to this site and I decided to kick things off by starting a thread of something I'm really passionate about, music.

First off, what the hell has become of the radio today? Everything is just over produced, cheap cop-out shit mixed in with some "autotunes" and extreme voice editing, all to the lyrics that was written by someone other than the actual artist. It is all just something to throw out that the majority will flock to, to make quick and big sales.

Where's the passion? Where's the meaning? Where is the singer songwriter that has spent 10 years in a log cabin finding inspiration for his music, when he knows he was well in demand. (Well...that's Bon Iver. lol, so I guess he exists.)

More people need to support the Indie music community. And not just for superficial reasons...not just to seem "hipster" or "different." It's to throw a big middle finger to huge record labels that squeeze the artist for what their worth, and at the end of the day have only created meaningless songs about "them bitchez in them clubs". Stop. please.

If you agree, and want to see more of the old "soul" put back into music of today, comment! :)

    Thanks loves.

    CheersXX

i could post lots of techno/house/minimal i like but i'll stick to alternative/rock/indie for you.

    my current music listening

    Regina Spektor - Soviet Kitsch
The Strokes - Angles (and all their albums can never get enough)
    Bjork - Biophillia
Darwin Deez - (self titled I think)
Talking Heads - Back catalogue of all their albums i got from a torrent... EPIC
    Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam

got the new m83 album which is more electronic but it does have rock/shoegazer elements though not too much of a fan of a lot of it.

that's just a small portion of my music listening as i'm djing psytrance/goa tekno all the time :D

i believe how we make art is directly affected by our living condition.

but i dont think all "them bitchez in tha club" kind of music is terrible, i just think theyre trying to capture more fun aspects of music, lots of people including myself dont really listen to lyrics. if i wanted to listen to words, i'd read or listen to a poem.

I agree with indielove about the poor quality of much mainstream pop - so called Rn'B.It seems to have reached a cultural nadir and I don't really see where it can go.Remember much of this stuff is bought by teenage girls who perhaps haven't developed very sophisticated musical tastes...lol.There is a lot of good new music coming out and being made but it doesn't get much mainstream media exposure.Maybe it's just the natural evolution of alternative and leftfield music to find it's place amongst ever more niche and specialized crowds. Also the whole 'rock star' thing is cliched and played out and I don't really see anyone stepping into those shoes in a way that really works anymore, someone with the enigmatic intensity of Kurt Cobain, for example.I think good music will survive, because people love to play and listen, but it's too fractured and multifarious today to fit into a single 'scene'.

the lyrics in music are much more euphoric though, music is proven to let out dopamine in the brain so understanding a songs lyrics is much better IMO.

i don't listen to all lyrics on music but i try to but some accents i just cannot grasp and if i like it enough i'll google the lyrics. :)

Most of the decent bands/artists in the era of "Fucking Good Music" were on the "heavier" psychedelics which allowed ideas to flourish, allowed the artist to pick up on the small things that just made everything flow and sound better. They kinda merged with their music to an extent, and loved it.
Now they're not on drugs(or mind expanding ones anyway), and don't really have a true connection to their music. When you have a true connection to your music - passion - everything has to be perfect. Perfection takes time, time is money.
Why spend millions promoting someone who's only gonna come out with 1 album every 5-10 years when you could get some gormless twat who just wants fame and money to sing songs they haven't even written, and release 5 albums a year?
Occasionally a really good band/artist comes along and makes it to the charts and then disappears forever... because they can't work as fast as the capitalist cunts want them to.

    That's my theory.

i like it bro but if you're into the electronic music scene like me they take lots of psychedelics and the styles some producers are coming out with are just stunning.

As long as accountants and the likes of Simon Cowell are running the music industry the music will be a giant stinking pile of manure. We need the likes of a Bill Graham or another Ahmet Ertegan to straighten this out. My high school years were 1968 - 1972, the radio was an incredible place back then.

I completely agree that mainstream music is crap anymore
I knew back in 99 2000 that artists were losing their individuality
And becoming slaves to the industry. However I still find great music
all the time,on slacker radio and I'm a major music head.
underground hiphop such as atosphere, sage francis, and mac lethal
Are lyricallly poetic. And bands like kasabien, kaiser chiefs, and company of thieves
are great bandswho cares about mainstream?
As long as you know where to look great music will always be made.

    Welcome.

That's why I don't listen to the "radio" for music. Online sources are where it's at for me. About all I can stomach on broadcast radio is NPR. That's what I have on when I drive, which is rare.

    Hell ya it was.

Hey, thanks for the suggestions! Talking heads if fucking good stuff, and by the way I definetly enjoy my "techno indie", too.

Heres some songs you migh' like.

    "Crimewave", by Crystal castles
"Golden Skans", Klaxons -- but they're not techno...
    "Holograms", by Fol Chen
"Love letter to Japan", The bird and the bees. Me and my friends call them, soft tech.
"Blessa", by Toro Y Moi, -- also not tech, but you get the drift.
    "warpaint" krimson
"I start to run", White denim. Not sure what youd classify them as.

Also, anything by Tiesto really. Lemme know if any of these caught your liking:) cheers!

I gotta admit that i dont get people complaining (that much!) about todays music... really

I mean, 'mainstream' (as you say...) music is (normally) made by the youth of the time, and the youth of different times have different ideas and are different...

...then of course the music from back then when you were in high school college whatever is gonna be better! ... at the time of your life, youll relate to the people who are making music - theyre the same age as you are, you could be friends and whatever - and you like music then

as you get older... the artists you like will get older too, and youll keep on liking them, but the youth changes... and will make somewhat 'different' music... which you 'just dont get'...

(i didnt lived the 70s... but) im pretty sure that in the 'gold era of rock n roll', the older people also didnt like 'mainstream' music... theyd rather stay with their old music, from back then when they were younger... (jazz?)

talk about lyrics.... 'them bitches in da club'? to me thats the same with 'its so easy when everybody is trying to please me...' or 'i see you standin there thinkin youre so cool why dont you just fuck off' from back in '87...

    open your eyes !

'girls! girls! girls!' or ' i got the photos, menage a trois' thats also from '87... theres always been making music about 'them bitches at the club'...

even pink floyd (which to me are more conceptual and deep guys you know with all that progressive rock stuff, making songs about insanity and time and other stuff deeper than sex) back in the 70s made that song 'ooooh i need a dirty woman...' and they werent so you young at that time...

and i dont really give a fuck about lyrics...

you talk about about effort... look i really doubt that all the bands back then put a lot of effort in EVERY music... i think most of them are canon fodder... really...

you know that jimi's voodoo child slight return wasnt really like 'oh man i got make this song im thinking so much' (not to disrespect him, i really like his work)... you know voodoo child was all like 'alright lets play this in E' and bam they jammed a few times and bam there you have it... (not saying thats bad)...

as a guitar player, i bet 95% of all songs in E minor were made like 'alright lets play a little' 'oh thats cool put some lyrics' 'oh there! awesome!'

but the way i see it, that (all of the above) isnt really the point...

...I say that, music is made for you to listen to it

some will go further and try to understand it

but if it sounds good, you listen
if it sound bad, you dont

i dont care about how much effort the artist put into it if it sounds good, i dont care how much money the artist made if it sounds good

if the meaning is deep, good
if the meaning is shallow, who gives a fuck it sounds good anyway?

now if you really dislike all todays music,

JUST DONT LISTEN TO IT MAN!

and if you dont have anything to say feel free to correct my grammar spelling ortography or whatever
