is it possible to create a "makeshift grill"? I don't want to spend money on one but I'm going camping in a week and need one to cook with. I was thinking of taking the rack out of the oven and just let the fire burn down and then cook on that? Would that wreck the oven rack or would it be ok? Any other ideas? thanks.

You can buy cheap ass grills for like $10. Otherwise, taking some sort of grate, like that from an oven, and propping it over a fire works fine.

If you're camping, get some large sticks and soak them in water for a while until they're wet enough that its not gonna dry as soon as you stick em over flame.. Then just lay them across a fire on the rocks close enough to support a pan or saucepan or whatever.

    Then cook. :D

hippiehillbilly is right, that's what I'd do. I think he's laughing because camping is supposed to be roughing it, and taking a grill with you is sorta soft. Taking the rack is one thing, but the grill? No way man.

Another thing you could do is cook with tinfoil, you could cook right on the coals, or wrap it up tight and put it IN the coals (which is what we usually do).
