last night i woke up at 2am, really hot and sweaty, and it was gross.. mostly on the back of my head and round the nape of my neck. i dont really wanna wash my locks again so soon, but i was wondering if anyone gots any recipes or ideas about making up a refreshing spray? to make my head not smell manky, and to maybe help my scalp a bit.. its itchy atm =/

I made a simple spray with tea tree oil and water- I spray it on whenever my scalp gets itchy. It really works and also gives it a nice smell.

I recently quite using soap on my hair. I was finding I was having the same problem. About a week after the wash my scalp was seriously nasty..oily and tons of buildup. After 3 weeks of not using any soap the itchiness and buildup started to go away. I just rinse with water and gets the hair clean without stripping any oil. It's a great balance so far.

Right...same with bronners and baking soda and the dreadheadhq shampoo. The make it feel clean then shortly after oily as shit and the buildup is back. It was a constant cycle for me. I was super skeptical too, but water worked like a charm and left with zero smell. Try it out, it may take of your problem. I did have to train my scalp before attempting it or it just wouldn't clean it.

It wasn't bronners specifically that does it. It's anything that strips the oil. I love bronners and use all sorts of organic soaps on my body. But when it comes to my hair, the oil production is anoying as hell. With water it pretty much eliminates that problem. By the fourth week my scalp feels better than it has in a long time.

    hokily dokily.

do you use anything like tea tree with the water? cause i gets dandruff, and tea tree seems to help =]

and did you just reduce the frequency of using shampoo, or just stop to train yer scalp?

I am all for just washing my hair with water... but after about three or four days of not washing, my scalp gets too itchy. Does this eventually just go away? I am having a hard time finding a nice balance for my scalp as well. :(

Yup pretty much. I would even recommend going only baking soda and water to train it because seems to not strip as much as soap. Just do it less often each time and wash when you absolutely need to.

I don't use any tea tree oil although you could. I guess you would dilute in a cup and just dump in on your head after your done with the shower. I message the hell out of my scalp while doing it. When it's drying it doesn't feel that clean and still retains the smell until it's fully dry. Once it's dry I have zero smell, even removed camp fire and cigarette smoke smells.

You'll have to train your scalp or just wait it out and keep rinsing with water more until it balances out. Mine took over three week without using any shampoo or soap to balance the oil production after over a year of training my scalp to need washed only once every week or 2, sometimes longer.

But yeah it itched like crazy for a while.

ive been just useing baking soda for almost a year now and its really taken care of most of nmy scalp probs i add lil teatree but twice or 3 times as much rosemary

but for just a nice refreshing spray .. try water teatree (anticeptic so that will help) rosemary (helps itchies a ton) and thyme (helps oiliness)
it kells the bacterias that causes the funk and has a nice scent while reducing oiliness

shadygrov, I do not think I will ever be able to train my scalp. If by train, you mean sit through three weeks of going crazy from itching... then I will never do it.

As long as I use bicarb, it's not itchy anymore... I have used rosemary on it and it certainly did stop the itchies... but now I feel that is unnecessary since the bicarb is taking care of it. However, I will add some tea tree oil in the next wash and see if this helps.

I'm a very oily person on my face, head and back... but arms, legs, torso are super dry. :S Also, my feet and hands are clammy. haha

I use... nothing! except water.... too lazy.... maybe sometime in the future ill buy some shampoo de chile that didnt hurt my dreads last time I used it...

itchiness does go awaay with time your scalp kid of gets used to it I guess... first week after all my dreads where finished [It was a 2-3 week process in finding different people to make dreads] I couldn't stand the itchiness and ended up washing them after 6 days but as each week goes by I can wait more and more without having to get them wet

yeah, im an oily person too, spesh my face =[

i do like the idea of just using water,, but sometimes i like a foamy head =D and the bicarb makes my scalp feel funky =/ atm im washing twice a week, and i dont 'rinse' my scalp in between washes

rosemary oil.. i found it in Holland & Barrett (rabbit food shop) and Boots (body care rubbish shop). theyd possibly have thyme oil too. i know youre not in the uk tho..

I miss Boots! Used to love that pharmacy.

Ok, well, I will start trying to go a few days longer in between. Today is day 2 and normally I would try and wash again, but I will try and give it four days and then do bicarb and tea tree oil.

I think you are suggesting that i add some of the rosemary oil to the wash as well, right Smelly? So maybe I'll go on an adventure for that soon. I had been using fresh herbs for it instead, but I'm all out.

btw, I've been using tea tree oil directly on my face with one of those white cotton pads and then wiping it off with another and my oily face is doing much better than normal. =)
