I'm almost 27 years old now...just got married...most of my friends between 24 and 26...and it seems that many of them are moving away from smoking and into getting shitfaced and I'm not liking the trend.

I understand that many people eventually move away from smoking as they have kids or take jobs that disallow them from doing so but for people whose personalities, interests, and attitudes seem to align more with smoking would move away from that as they get older.

I hope to be able to continue to smoke in the future. It just seems more like my idea of a good time as my times stoned seem to promote positive relaxation - good conversation, creating and appreciating of art, etc. - whereas drunken sprees not only leave one with a hangover, but the mindless fun is a lot less satisfying beyond the moment in which one experiences it.

I'm not sure what the average age of posters are here, and it does seem like many are quite young, but what do you all think? Is this common? What experiences have you had?

Well, most of my friends who were smokers stopped smoking as much when they had kids. Some quit altogether just for the sake they didn't want to be around their kids while high or possibly under any influence in their presence. (I think also in some cases it was a D.C.F.S. thing)

But the good news is,,, it's a big world, go make more friends. Plenty of folks your age and older who smoke. Your slot might have a lower number than my age bracket as your group ha a higher number of folks trying to knuckle down and get serious but thats just a guess. :cheers2:

I think life gets in the way, people get worried about their kids finding their drugs or being high around them, lots of places of employment drug test and if you get hurt on the job and there are drugs in your system, goodbye compensation. There's the legal aspect too, no one wants to be getting arrested for weed still at 40.

Then it's just cycle, people stop smoking, so you have less people to smoke with, so you start smoking less, and it just feeds on itself. Same with drinking, even 24 year olds with full time jobs are still out getting hammered, then people start drinking less, you have less people to go to the bar with so you don't as much, ect.

In my experience.. some 'friends' find harder drugs of choice (sigh), some have a change of heart then decide they're habits are getting in the way of other responsibilities then quit.. and then of course there are the ones like us who are just die hard and keep smoking no matter what lol. For the bigger picture in my opinion it's just people doing what they need to do, like other people have said here before me all you need to do is find other people who share your passion. Some friends are gonna move on :\ but don't let that drag you down.

Yeah my brother got married, so I am pretty sure he isn't smoking at all anymore pretty lame. I know I will be smoking a bunch throughout my whole life guranteed. No reason not to. I probably want other recreational drugs too but not nearly as often.

like MadCap said, life gets in the way. Alcohol is a party drug that people just hide under sometimes, so if they're the ones 'growing up' and drinking to basically pass the time 'til they die, and you're the one enjoying art, chillin and enjoying the simple things in life, i'd say you're a much more admirable person.

I'm 65 and smoked for about 3 years in the late 70's and a few times in the mid 80's but put it down because my family did not like it. I never was one to buck the system. Fine Hippie I AM! lol.. In the last 5 years my body aches and pains have become a ROYAL pain and thankfully I found ONE friend who used to smoke and still had a contact. I'm so grateful. My entire personality changes. I'm bipolar, ADHD, ADD, an absolute wreck, have panic attacks, yada yada. The medical profession has put me on every medication since the dawn of man and, SURPRISE none of it works. Meanwhile it's screwing my liver I'm certain. I am a miserable person without the MJ crutch. I've spent 65 years feeling like poop and being miserable. Now, as long as I can find a way, I'm enjoying life, laughing and really having a good time. It's all about the quality of life. MJ give me the spark I need, or the day is truly lost.

Nice to meet ya'll. This is my first post, just found this forum. Glad to meet ya!

Welcome Kat, sound's like you need to head a bit northwest to the Golden state where any decent doctor worth his salt could actually prescribe you an effective medication for your issues legally at least as far as the State is concerned.

I need ta' get my scrip soon too. then I could grow some legally and not have to worry about getting crappy old weed that just makes me want to sleep all the time (70% of what I found in Chicago) Just need to research the justifiable conditions before i go see a Doctor, I'm sure I have at least one,,, wonder if Chronic pain in the ass from federal scheduling of a recreational drug thats less harmful than Alcohol would count?

Well alcohol really isn't a party drug, most people past college age stop getting trashed too. Alcohol is a social drug, literally. It's legal, so there are bars. I mean you can sit around with people and smoke a blunt and get high, but that's only going to last for 15min. You can go to the bar with people and each drink will take 15-20min, it's just a way to socialize and do something with your hands while you're doing it. Plus alcohol is lower inhibitions and in smaller amounts acts as a stimulant so it's the perfect drug for a group of people in a place surrounded by people they don't know.

thats what i meant by party drug, the social part and not the literal party part. sorry if i wasn't quite clear.
alcohol is more of a crutch than weed anyways

I actually cut down upon smoking...and you know what I took up? sobriety. Seriously I dont like being drunk or tipsy at all. And other drugs.... well I dont know my last acid trip pretty much helped me kill all and any kind of interest in various drugs whatsoever. Now the only unsobering feeling that I enjoy is from cannabis.

And I'm only 21.... seriously ever since I turned that age I've only been drunk less than 5 times... pretty impressive because before in my teenage years I was just focused on gettin as thrashed as possible every weekend.

Sounds like we are in a similar place. Although I still like to do other drugs occasionally, but that excludes alcohol. Since summer 08 when I first met lucy I have been drunk about 5 times as well.

I'm 40 years old and I did not really start to smoke on a regular basis until I was 36. I first tried it when I was about 27, I liked it alot and continued to smoke for a couple of months and then only every once in a while after that. I plan on smoking it for the rest of my life. I have a new wife and she is cooler with it. I would prefer this to getting plowed on liquor or having to take pills for my other problems. Marijuana to me is a wonder drug. Good for ya in many ways. I even think it kept me from getting the flu many times.

I'm 55, still smoke occasionally but only like to take a hit or two. Most of my friends who still get high are the same way, like to get stoned occasionally but don't care to get totally wasted like we did in our younger days. I've never failed a drug test but smoking pot regularly tends to mess with my work ethic. Maybe after I retire I'll start using it more, stay at an elderhostel in Amsterdam, whatever.

People do tend to quit smoking as they age. They grow up and grow out, I guess. Grow out of things like video games, smoking pot, regular drinking, tattoo's.

It's sad to see, at times. Not only do people grow out of things that damage their health, they get past trying to change the world, having big dreams...ect, ect.

My friends dad is well into his 60's old school hippie from back in the day. He used to smoke with us all the time, he quit everything a year ago, and he's still happy.

I don't know, I plan to smoke the rest of my life, I don't like to drink, and I just love Mary too much, she's always been kind to me .

I've been smoking fairly often for almost 40 years. I've never really changed my habits much, and now that it's been decriminalized in Massachusetts, I feel even freer.

I've used cannabis less over the years. I started when I was 16, and could do it whenever I wanted. As I got older, I got into trouble with the law (for cannabis) and my use became restricted. Right now I am waiting on the completion of my probation so I can use cannabis again. I think it has its place in a normal life and I'll use it forever unless it stops me from getting a job, then I will first try to find a new job!

    Hey man,

I kinda know where your going - been there... I'm 42, and here is how things worked on my end.

You hit a point in your life it seems, were you pretty much have to choose. At this time, my wife and I have a lot of friends in our lives... Not a single one of them do not smoke weed... Some more than others, but we all do...

We also found that at one point many of our friends started drinking instead... Those people we found were just gonig down "the wrong path". They were living the type of life that we just didn't want. They would fight, they were the ones that were always miserable.... would put others down.. I guess a good way to describe it is, they were lost.

Only way was to move away from that crowd... and we just found ourselves in a more "chilled, relaxed" crowd. A friendly crowd :) -

You know, I also have 3 kids, and between us all... I would rather they all marry potheads vs. drunks...

Its truly almost like when you get older, there are two compleatly different cultures around ya...

    Ya know...

    Peace
    Soc
