    so, what else is new?

this has been 'offically' known, since the early and mid 1950's, when rachel carson's book, silent spring, was first published.

you really need to study the history of ms. carson and silent spring. what happen to her for being the messeger, is quite horrifing!

back in 1970, my first year of jonior high school, i check out a copy of silent spring from the public library.
the northeast school district board of "trustees," had banned her book from all school libraries.
i brought silent spring to school, to read during my free time.
i got sent to the principal, and was promptly ripped a new asshole, for bringing; to use the principal's own words, "that unamerican communist trash, into our proud true american schools.":ack2: WHAT AN ASSHOLE!

yeah, nothing new there with that link you gave dude. that's all very, very, very old news indeed.

the more things change, the more they stay the same.

most homo sapiens are quite dense and stupid!
that is one super hell of a horrible and sad truth to say about our species!
AT TIMES, I JUST WANT TO BREAK DOWN AND CRY OVER THAT TRUTH!

"Macquarie University palaeobiologist Dr John Alroy says it's caused by a range of human behaviours and activities, along with climate change. "

"the major extinction event currently underway"

The article didn't state what these were. Much overly dramatic title for a mere shock value article.

Species are dying off at a rate not seen since the last mass extinction event. Higher animals we know we can do without, but if the plants and insects go, we're done for.

Mark Twain said that if honeybees were to go extinct, the human race would follow in four years.

"What's worrisome is that some groups permanently become dominant that otherwise wouldn't have," he says. "So by causing this extinction, we are taking a big gamble on what kind of species will be around in the future. We don't know how it will turn out. People don't realise that there will be very unpredictable consequences."

Every creature on this planet will exploit the resources available to them to the detriment of other species and even themselves in the absence of natural predation.
That is why we have hunting seasons and restrictions about importing plants and animals into different environments.

It has always been that way and always will be
Humans are no more exploitive or "evil" in this respect than any other species around, plant or animal.
We are just more adept at manipulating our environment and are more numerous.
Does that result in more devastating and far reaching consequences? Yes, of course it does, but we are really doing the same thing any other species would given the opportunity.

Reminds me of the time my friend was getting bitched out by some women at work because he would go deer hunting every season when he lived on the east coast.
She was appalled at the idea of killing some poor defensless deer.
He just laughed at her and said, "Have you ever seen what deer do when there habitat gets overpopulated? Trust me hunting is doing them a favor"

not sure of the point I'm trying to make relative to the topic, except that we are just acting naturally and what is needed is another asteroid strike to reset the mechanism.
    :p

considering they are the primary pollinaters for a huge variety of plants, that is very true.

Why do people freak out? You wouldn't weep over the dinosaurs beings extinct, yet everyone's so scared of keeping mother nature exactly the way she is.

Honey, Henessey, everybody has something they hold dear to their heart and are sensitive about. For some of us, it's mother nature as we know and love her.
For you, it could be your lactation and that you never loose your ability to play that role.
Be understanding to one another's sensitivities.

Why would he have to be god to claim this?

Surely god wouldn't claim this, as it would kind of mean that he failed.

The person posted Mark Twain's opinion as if it had any validity.

His opinion has as much validity as any other written opinion, including those written in a 2000 year old book, and those written on a screen.

Your point is? All I said was that you can't be believing things about the future just because some smart poet dude said it. Just live and see what happens, stop trying to categorize the future.

Because what we are doing to the environment is vandalism. It's the same reason that people freak out when vandals spray paint swastikas on their houses. To some people, the environment is like their home, and trashing it is like trashing their house. Especially when the people doing the trashing respond by saying that they just don't give a big fat F.

Its stupid that this issue is being ignored by many.
There are many people out there who dont believe any of this is real, but I would rather err on the side of caution and actually do something about it before its too late.
