I didn't realize how bad it had gotten. I got dressed and put on a blow the knee length skirt and uggs and as I caught myself in the mirror I realized how huge my calfs are. They're the same size as my upper thighs! ): They're pretty muscular but there is a lot of fat on those puppies.
How can I make them smaller? Will doing calf raises make them smaller or will it make the muscle bigger? I need help this is a calf emergency!

Thanks a bunch that makes sense. I never stretch my calves, but do other parts of my body.

i remember reading an article a long time ago by this woman who cycled a lot to keep herself fit... she was talking about how muscular and bulky it made her... so she started doing yoga and really lengthened her muscles but still kept very toned. stretching is good anyway, right? it's worth a shot :p

I have calves that could kill a bitch.

They're not even fat. The fat starts above my knee. They're just really, really muscular. Probably from being a catcher for five years and having to hold up the rest of my chunky self.

Doing calf raises is just going to work the muscle under the fat. In order to make anything on your body smaller, you need to burn the fat, not just tone the muscle underneath the fat. Stomach, thighs, calves, etc. There's no way to target just one spot.

I started wearing flats more and my calves got tons smaller. I am wondering whats up with that. I thought heels made your calves more defined?

If your calves are fat then you will need to lose fat in general by diet and exercise. Spot reducing while not entirely impossible does not give the results one wants, the exception is if one is already quite lean and has a slight problem fat area--where you have a tendency to store fat. Sure do calve raises once or twice a week, but work them indirectly when you are doing cardio. They will pump up a little when you work them, don't worry about this, keep the weight light, and stretch. Topical fat creams containing yohimbine may help depending on the type of fat, but I'd hold off on that until you get closer to your ideal body composiiton.

well my suggestion for stretching was more for the muscle bulk than for the fat... you can't spot reduce fat, but you can target certain muscle groups and strengthen those separately from the rest of your body.... yoga does produce slim muscles, especially in the mid section because it's all about the posture and tensing the stomach and back. you can put on bulk in certain areas- my dad raced bicycles for years and if he didn't keep up with his upper body workouts his legs would be massive and his arms would be flabby. but i've heard calf size is mostly genetic anyway.

Thats what I believe. Might have something to do with the fiber type.

I've got muscular calves too. I don't know if it's from the years of dance training and all the power walking/jogging I do, but it's always bothered me. I mean, they're not huge or anything, not the size of my thighs at all, but I always get so jealous of the girls with super skinny calves! Blah!

Oh, and the women on my father's side of the family tend to have bigger calves, not fat mind you, just thicker. So I guess that combined with my exercise regimen makes for what I've got.

Oh well, such is life. Not a whole lot I can do about it because as my doctor would say, I'm healthy as a horse. ;)

Yoga/Pilates and lots of walking (like 2 hours a day) can make your calf and shin area gorgeous.
