I've never meditated before but would love to try it, anyone have a list of pointers to get me started??
There are countless ways to meditate and everyone has their own technique. The most important things are comfort and quiet. Its best to meditate where you wont be distracted and at a time when you dont have any worries and somewhere you are comfortable. My technique is usually to burn some incense and put on some comfortable, loose clothes then lie on my back on the floor - you need to find the best position for yourself. I begin be concentrating on my breathing, taking deep full breaths then i start to relax every part of my body by focussing on each part separately, starting with the feet. Once I have settled into a rhythmical breathing pattern and my body is no longer tense (it usually takes me about 5 mins to get this far), I then start to block out all the thoughts in my head until its just empty. It takes quite a bit of practice to do this but its worth the effort. After some time its possible to take the meditative state quite deep but even a fairly short, shallow meditation improves your feelings of wellbeing. As I said this is only one way of many to meditate but it works best for me. Good luck, hope you find peace
If I'm meditating and I have difficulty emptying my mind, I often use a mantra. "Gate, Gate, Pargate, Paramsagate, Bodhi Svahag" used by Buddhists is one of my personal favourites, but you can just count from one to ten if you want to.
i personally cant lie down while meditating, otherwise ill slip past deep relaxation into near sleep and then the half dreams mix with my sense of the now and its hard to distinguish the two. i meditate best sitting on my front porch which is somewhat secluded from the sidewalk due to shrubberys and various other plants, but i always try to key in on nature, either fluttering of leaves in the wind or the sun on my skin, or the untouched snow on the ground, whatever, and that usually helps me key into the now.
well said diancecht sometimes i like to go outside early in the morning (5-6) and sit with my legs crossed and my fingers (middle and thumb) touching, the "traditional" pose that you see a lot, and i can watch the birds and the sun and trees, or i can close my eyes, but what did that mantra mean whoever posted it?
Is it good to think of an ultimate place where you'd like to be like cravas(if that's how you spell it) and imagine waterfalls or a calm forest if I'm wrong then please tell so then I can do it properly because i've tried quite a few times before but I got lost and wasn't 100% sure on what I was supposed to do. "When the rich wage war, It's the poor who die." - Jean - Paul Sartre.
im not really into it, but when i do i sit cross legged on the floor and clear my mind of everything...it helps when i feel stressed
The way this mantra was translated for me reads: Gone, Gone, Beyond all illusions of reality, Gone on the breath. A very beautiful mantra that will merge with sunrise or sunset or any time in-between.
I and I have many different ways for this simple complex practice. 1. Focus mindfully on your breathing 2. Let go concepts of how to practice, this is where you can place your feet 3. Awaken in the moment
i usually start like Diancecht said and focus on everybody part until its completely relaxed, then i do lots of pointless math as fast as i can in my head until it goes numb...
if words were required for living, if interpretations were required, meditation would not be, but neither would life.
This is what I do: 1.I sit down criss-cross applesauce in a comfortable place (grass, pillows,my bed) with my pointer finger and thumb togather. 2.I close my eyes and I take deep breaths. 3.I think of a relaxing thought This works for me.

I haven't meditated in awhile, but need to do so...would relieve a lot of stress I carry around --- The way I was "tutored" to start, was mentioned earlier --- Create a scene in your mind that sort of consumes you and takes you only to that place. Mine was a white room, looking out over the ocean - eventually, I got that simple white room to be quite architecturally complete, with a sunken resting area with a beautiful white sofa, and two areas that were elevated - one with a bank of windows that I could open or close depending on if I wanted the sound of the waves rushing the beach, and the other elevated area looking off to the side of the "room" where I could see the sand and trees. I also had a door that I was able to walk into the room to begin my meditation and walk out of when I was done. I have to say though that it took several months to create such a complete and interactive meditative state. Now that I haven't done it in awhile it will probably take me several months to achieve again, but even when I just need a reality break, I can summon my room fairly easily it's just not as interactive or clear as it once was. That mantra is absolutely beautiful, I love it. I'll have to remember it. Gina.
meditation is abeautiful art. I meditate twice to three times daily,, and it has the most profound effect, it has helped me to learn to live in the moment and to accept all for their beliefs. As already stated there are countless ways to meditate, i feel that it has the largest impact, when im in a natural environment,, luckily theres a nature reserve behind my house, sunrise are sunset are the most epic times and i feel they help to prepare me for my day, or to contemplate on the days events, and work on me perfecting my four sublime states. If anyone is curious,, or wants to get talking about meditation, yoga conjob44@hotmail.com is where people can find me,, if i helped one person, i feel my input was worthwhile, peace, love acceptance.
