Mescaline is chemically very similar to MDMA (X) and some have scientists consider MDMA is the synthetic version of mescaline (similar to the idea of LSD being a synthetic version of psilocybin). However as far as I know the two psychedelics do not produce similar effects at all. Although I have never taken mescaline (but I been on X), many people describe mescaline as more of a classical psychedelic experiance similar to psilocybine but still quite different. It seems to make somewhat sense. MDMA seems to be a mixture between mescaline and methamphetamine. How does mescaline compare to MDMA?
mescaline is far more spiritual and visual and its a hell of alot safer then x is x use over time can really fuck up your mind as far as memmory goes (total loss of short term memmory till normal functionality is impossible) mesculine use has no real effects on memory, but can cause you to be very spiritualy elevated which could potentialy cause some minor social issues..i.e. being on a higher plane so having dificulty communicating with less spiritualy out there straight people i recomend it if your looking for real spiritual enkightenment type trips

E gives a serotonergic rush, so does mesc. but mesc makes E seem like a waste of time, as it's pretty much just another euphoriant; mesc will teach you some things about something.
I think most would agree that mesc is far more spiritual and profound of an experience. On mesc there is insight, OEVs & CEVs, sensations of merging with ones surroundings or even the universe. On E the realm is more of personal happiness, increased energy, and group dynamics. Sure there is some similarity at the molecular level and at the macrophysical level, but they are not difficult compounds to distinguish (at reasonable doses). Both act on serotonergic pathways. E most significantly on the 5ht2 receptor and also dopamine. I suspect that mesc has a more general affinity to the 5ht family and less effect on dopamine. Look at the history of the two drugs, Indians have used mesc. as a spritual teacher for centuries...E is an unrealized diet drug, almost realized therapeutic tool, but mostly a (relatively benign, slightly toxic) party drug.
The similiarities in my opinion come from the fact that most standard psychedelics (LSD, Psilocybin, Psilocin, DMT etc. are classified as indoles. Mescaline however is a phenethylamine, like MDMA, MDE, MDA, 2C-B, etc. I can say first hand there is a very close connection. The mescaline body high is wonderful, I find myself rubbing my harms and massaging my hands while on it, much like MDMA.
