Milk alternatives

    Anyone know any good milk alternatives apart from Soya milk. I'm a vapha so I have to keep my milk intake down because it doesnt agree with me in large amounts. I use cocnut milk sometimes but am looking for other suggestions.

    Don't think I've actually drank it but how about rice milk?

    I've heard of people drinking rice, almond, oat and potato milk. I dunno how those would taste cuz I usually just drink soy. Are you vegan or lactose intolerant? I'm not familiar with the term 'vapha'.

    Make Grain-Milk at Home!

    Store bought oat, rice, soy, almond, potato and coconut milk is expensive due to shipping costs, a thin market, and the tetra-pack they come in. Rice milk is also expensive due to the import quotas placed on rice to subsidized a miniscule number of US rice farmers at a massive cost to consumers. It is so hard to boycott when so many farmers and agribusiness concerns have been lost to the dark side. In any case, making your own milk at home will be less expensive than storebought milk of any sort, from cows or grains.

    Recipes

    Of these, soy milk is the most labor intensive. Rice and oat milk are straight forward and fast. Almond milk is inbetween. If anyone has a recipe for potato milk, send me email author@writeme.com. Cost per gallon is anywhere from 50 cents to $1 a gallon. Multiply your current wage per hour times 1/6 to factor in the cost of your time. You probabably already have the equipment, so that doesn't factor into the cost. The electic and gas costs thought probably are less than a half dollar, especially if you use a pressure cooker or soak your grains.

    Complicated Rice Milk
    Fancy Rice Milk
    Horchata, Mexican Rice Milk
    Plain Almond Milk
    Almond-Oat Milk
    Plain Oat Milk
    Sprouted Oat Milk
    Alternative Sprouted Oat Milk
    Plain Soy Milk
    Tofu Soy Milk This creates soy milk as a by product of making tofu.
    Soy butter It uses soy milk.

    This is a mexican rice water or rice milk. It is a dessert.

    1 cup rice, washed
    2 quarts water
    1 cinnamon stick
    Sugar to taste
    Mix together all ingredients; let stand 3 hours. Simmer for 1/2 hour. Puree in a blender and strain through a cloth. Taste for sweetness and add sugar if necessary. Chill and serve over ice.

    almond and hazlenut milk are okay, but sweet very often. i recommend you make your own almond milk
    why don't you drink soya milk? there are tons of tasty ones, if it's a taste issue
    rice milk's okay too

    I don't wanna drink Soya milk because it tastes horrible and I read that most soya products are now GE. Vapha is my ayruvedic type and to much dairy porducts aren't recommended for me. I currently drink alot of milk and have natural yoghurt with my muesli every morning so I'm trying to cut down.

    I thought that was what ya meant but I kept thinking it was vata, not vapha....I like reading about ayurveda also.

    i think it is vatta. at any rate, there are plenty of soy milks that taste great and are definitely not made gmo. try vita soy, creamy original, in the non refrigerated section.

    i'm about to try a new nut milk ...

    NUT MILK

    100 grams of whole blanched hazelnuts, almonds or pecans (gives brownish milk)
    1 litre of water
    a small pinch of salt
    optional: 1 tbsp of clear honey

    Put ingredients in blender and spin for about 10 minutes.
    Pour through a fine sieve.
    Squeeze out residue with the back of a spoon or squeeze out in a tea towel.
    Freeze residue (this is in fact very fine nut flour) and use for baking purposes.
    Store in the fridge.
    Use withing 2-3 days

    and there's a nut yogurt recipe too!
    CASHEW YOGURT (dairy free)

    ½ cup raw cashew nuts
    2 cups water OR 4 times the amount of cashews
    honey as specified below

    Process the cashews and water, strain through a sieve to get milk.
    Bring the cashew "milk" to a boil, cook for a few minutes, stirring constantly.
    Cool to temperature not higher than 99-115 F., stirring often.
    Add one teaspoon of honey per cup and mix well.
    Add 1/4 tsp ProGurtYogurt starter yogurt starter per 2 QUARTS of nut yogurt.
    Mix until no powder is visible.
    Pour into yogurt maker/yogurt making pots.
    Cook for 8 - 10 hours.
    Refrigerate.
