I can't stand the taste of fake meat (like beef crumbles ect.) I lvoe veggie burgers and stuff like that but for the most part for my protien intake Im doing tofu, nuts and seeds and beans. I found a mock chicken recipe I want to make next week but I have never used mock chicken...how is it? Is it better then the fake beef? Whats your opinion? What about tofurkey? Any thoughts would be appreciated!
Sorry, haven't tried it yet. The only fakey chicken I've had are Morningstar's buffalo-nuggets. All you taste there are the spices, before your mouth disowns you love, mom
I think we lived on those for a week once. Must have the spicy ones. the others are weirdly stringy in a bad way.
I haven't found any vegan yet. They all have milk(whey) or eggs in them. Have you tried seitan? It's as easy to make as bread, and it's what many fake-meat products are made of. Good luck!
morning star buffalo chik nuggets are all i use when it comes to fake chicken. but as mentioned before you really only taste the spices. i tried some chik patties my mom got me (she does try), but they were too much like chicken for my taste preferences.
I made seitan recently and I messed something up It tasted like dough soaked in soy. Undercooked? allowed to rise a bit (not that I can think of, but I was multi-tasking)? old gluten? dunno.
tofurky rocks. infact i was thinking i should try and make an "easter" tofurky.. maybe some how make it with a "ham-like" glaze.. hmm.. hhmmmmm.. wheels turning
Yellowbellyhippie- I have 2 favourite fake chicken types. There is Worthington Chick-ettes which comes as 1 pound and is frozen into a log. Here it is $6.15. If you cook it, I suggest tearing it as opposed to chopping, as the texture is different. It makes excellent pot pie! http://vegcooking.com/recipeshow.asp?RequestID=383&Search=pot%20pie de-lic-ious! Also, there are strips. Morningstar Farms has excellent fake chicken strips. http://www.kelloggs.com/cgi-bin/brandpages/product.pl?product=4971&company=23 I suggest letting them thaw (or microwave to thaw) and then sauteing them in a bit of oil or earth balance until golden. The texture changes a lot when sauteed, for a more realistic and delicious texture. Here, a bag (1/2 pound- 8 oz) costs $3.00-$3.50 ish depending on where you get it. I get these all the time and make everything with them. Fake chicken salad, fake chicken pasta salad, etc. I hope this helps!
I'm great. been exercising more and trying to replace my beloved dessert with fresh fruits, heehee. PMS makes me an eating monster. I want everything salty, chocolately and peanut buttery. (and yes all my food is still vegan. i make a mean cheesecake. go to deliciouschoices.com and buy the recipe book. It's $10 very well spent!)
I will definitly check it out...I just ordered Vegan Family Favorites and Im so excited for it to get here!!!
Here is an article on making Seitan that may or may not be useful. http://www.vrg.org/recipes/vjseitan.htm I had mock chicken on a wooden drumstick last night. It was kinda strange.
Loma Linda Tender Bits! They're chicken-ish nuggets that come packed in a can. We dust them in chappati flour seasoned with garlic powder, chili powder and a little black pepper. Then we fry them in the wok in an inch or so of olive oil until toasty brownish. SOOOO yummy! I dip mine in BBQ or buffalo sauce. Hubby is a ketchup purist. Loma Linda makes lots of vegan fake meat in cans. I use the sausages to make a gravy we eat on top of rice. Most of these we have very rarely because they ar highly processed and we don't want to expose our kid too much to meat-like foods.
