I dug up my family's old ass solid wood coffee table from the garage and there's mold on it. I used a regular wood cleaner on it and it didn't do anything. Does anyone know how to properly get it out of wood furniture?
To get the stains out is probably pretty impossible. The only possibility I see is to try to use sandpaper on it, to lighten it up. (mold grows pretty deep, and to get it out completely the damage would be pretty big) Then use an anti-mold detergent to kill the remaining spores. Then you can try to paint over it. If you really killed it, nothing should grow back through the paint. This is just a suggestion, I am not a carpenter. But maybe you can post a picture.
the mold doesn't seem like it's that bad, i don't even think i could capture it with a picture. This isn't something i could sandpaper up and paint over, it's too nice to do anything like that to it. It's probably about 40 years old and a treasure in my family.
try bleach. we had some on a wall, i believe thats what i used. it worked there was just some stain left, but the wall was white too.
The following was taken from DIY.com: You could clean furniture with a solution of 25 percent bleach in water. This will kill the mildew and mold, and enable you to remove it with some soap and water. Some discoloration may remain in the wood. The solution is caustic, be careful with it. The mold and mildew grow because of the presence of sufficient moisture. Wash the wood one or more times with a solution of: * 2/3 cup of trisodium phosphate * 1/3 cup of detergent * 1 quart of house holds bleach * Enough water to make a gallon
If it's a lot of mold, stripping or sandpapering the top layer of the table might be your best option... although you can also try mold/mildew cleaner (contains cholrine)... but sandpapering I think might work the best.
TSP is your answer. I farted around with a piece of furniture for a year before going that route. Insta fix, almost.
