who here is a fan of moonshine? I didn't even know it existed until I moved to the south lol.... last summer my friend had some that was in a Patron bottle, we drank all the liquid (it was harsh and kinda nasty actually) and there were some peaches and strawberries in the bottom which we also consumed. That was some bad fruit. And for my 21st (next month) my mom is getting me a quart of this delicious stuff that tastes like apple pie, straight up. I'm excited. The only bad part is, if made incorrectly you can go blind from it and that aint cool, foo.
here a few years ago my granddad was showing me how to make the stuff, and i fell in love with it, although i havent made any in a while i still keep his old equipment around because he passed on on last year. granddad would tell me the entire going blind thing was from the lead solder people used to repair the stills, instead of using silver or bronze. so know who its coming from and enjoy!!
my uncle makes that shit.. my aunt cleans the floors with it, it will remove paint.. Though im no fan of alcohol.. I will take a shot of fire water...
hehe I'd try my hand at making it but i'm no chemist. And it sure as hell is fire water. The first shine I tried (in the Patron bottle), I swear you could get drunk just by smelling it.
Brewers know that different alcohols are made from different sources of sugar/fruit/yeast mixed with factors of speed and heat... Wine for example being more prone to create Methanol instead of Ethanol, compared to other sources I hear. Methanol will make you go blind. An experienced distiller can use a column reflux to separate the methanol exclusively before running the rest of the shine out... Otherwise old shiners might talk about tossing out the 'heads' or 'tailings' as I offhand forget which end of the vapours were mostly methanol, or water - things which make your shine less than pure.
Methanol is the heads (lower temp then ethanol), isopropyl, isobutanol, etc (higher temp) is the tails.
Methanol = blindness. Moonshine = shit. Everclear is where it's at as far as getting the strongest shit possible. Oh, and not dying.
i live in texas and have never had moonshine, where do you get it? i've had everclear, that much be pretty much the same thing, you can't get much stronger than that. It tastes like shit though, like drinking gasoline or something
There's one firm belief among distillers: Moonshine must never touch wood. Check out Piedmont Distillers and Corsair Artisan Distillery.
why because it would make wood alcohol? cuz you definitely don't want that i wanna drink some moonshine though so I can say that i've done moonshine.
Cool you can still buy column reflux stills, hotplates, turbo yeast... and some copper line online. And in maybe a week or more of operation, have produced enough solvent/essence in-house, which would have paid for the savings in price on alcohol taxes to cover cost of equipment. Still you might pay retail sugar taxes, and labor is involved, time and money investments which erode your otherwise lifestyle, to eventually become as much a hobby of love as a retail boon. For those who practice do-it-yourself methodology, with the minimal legal/taxable interaction interests possibly, most often. An ex-cop was recently busted selling gallons of home made brew in a dry village nearby. Bootlegging alcohol is till a very lucrative biz for some. Transportation Security Screening in similar areas as much find illicit alcohol as anything else.
Yea, I gotta reference library of foxfire book and its an Appalachian homesteading manual... Not necessarily high tech, refined, or taking advantages of all the modern technology to distill pure essences and solvents. But its a starting point for a caveman to figure out one of 100 ways to skin a cat. These books cater to butcherin hogs, building cabins, etc back-woods antiquated churning-buttre methodology. Modern science and gizmos show there are better mousetraps available... But the recipe that caught my eye was the method of making aplejack - that I'd like to try in an upcoming hard winter. Make Ice beer, ice wine - but applejack sounds like a traditional holiday favorite (I usually end up brewing ginger beer in winter).
i had moonshine once, apparently. it just tasted like really strong (nasty) vodka. can't moonshine be any type of liquor, since it's just "illegally made alcohol?"
Moonshine is an artform, get the best & real deal in Kentucky, the original home of the best moonshine & meth. Proper moonshine doesn't taste that bad, strong for sure you drink a quarter of a balljar of that shit and your on the floor...GT's
