What form of art would you say has the potential to effect an observer the most? I would say film.. which i guess might be prtty obvious... but does anyone else think any different? Literature? Music? I wouldn't say that ALL films have a more profound effect on people than other art forms do... but if it is made well... it can combine the effect of music.. picture.. etc into one big ball of expression.
Live action drama - like a play. You ever see a performance of the Tempest where the actor is so close to you, he/she could spit in your face and shakes a crowd of people to tears or to surprise, anger, happiness, etc with the drop of a hat?
I think film is both the least expressive art form and has the least potential to affect the observer. It can employ two sense perceptions simultaneously but it is extremely limiting because of how it presents its material. The lines of communication between the artist and viewer are closed and narrow. It is a particular image accompanied by a particular piece of music that is meant to convey a particular emotion. The more sense reception that is encoded in the art form, the less input the viewer is allowed. Unlike literature, film does not allow for the use of imagination, which is what makes film such a powerful tool for shaping cultural habits. Film is such a powerful media because, more than any other form of art, it comes to stand in for our everyday lives. We have come to see ourselves in relation to others in relation to film. It has the potential to shape our lives and in that sense it has great potential to affect our lives. The scope of that affect, though is extremely limited, which is why as I mentioned it is such a powerful tool of brainshapers. For open lines of communication we have to look at visual art, particularly painting. Where so much of the input into what message is being conveyed rests in the creative merit of the viewer and not an encoded message by the artist.
Thats rly interesting waking life... never thought of it like that before. But surely film has the potential to convey the most precise ideas and emotion... so a director... or film writer really has control over what he is trying to put across to people and can basicaly channel thoughts as directly as possible into peoples minds.. which i guess is what you were saying about brainshaping.
most expressive? I'm going to go with performance art. it incorporates all senses, or at least has the potential to, and as such it can deliver a powerful message in an effective manner. the drawback is that it is not able to reach as large an audience as as music or film.
I was going say performance art...specifically dance. You are using music, movement, and facial expressions...everything working together at once. It leaves the person watching it open to interpretation...forces them to think.
i read today that exotic dance/stripping is supposed to be a form of self expression. very engaging, but not very profound. though, titties can be quite inspiring. they could be a catalyst to expressive art.
good tunes i would say. Beethoven said music brings the listener into the mind of the composer, i dont think anything else really does that.
Yes, films... also, music video clips... but I guess all art forms can do this, it depends on how they are used by their creators to convey a message... and also on the observer's personality or previous experiences.
Anybody who says "film" has never heard of Uwe Boll. But I guess my vote is for literature/poetry. I love all art (including film, disregarding my smart ass remark) but words can convey so much in such a direct manner. Or even in an indirect manner. I love words.
