Who do you think doesn't get near the credit they deserve for their skills? Personally I think John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin was one of the greatest musicians. Every one gives credit to Page with the whole "he played a double necked guitar" argument. Well there were times that Jones played a triple necked guitar (Base, six string, and 12 string). Plus the guy played piano, mandalin and what everelse needed to be done. John Paul Jones I salute you!
He is also a fantastic producer. I'll probably get veggies thrown at me for this but.... I'm not taking anything from Page or Plant, don't get me wrong, but,I think the rhytm section really made Zepplin anyway.
Well, if we judge people on the amounts of necks they play - Rick Neilson of Cheap Trick just thrashed everyone with his 5 neck Hamer. John Paul Jones is absolutely the secret weapon that Led Zeppelin never wanted to talk about. He did all the keyboard parts as well as the bass parts and other assorted stuff.. (Like the Mandolin part on Battle of Evermore). Highly under-rated and under appreciated.
I'd have to say the entire band of TOOL anybody that can incorporate the equation for the spiral of archemdes into music must have lots of talent
Mississipi Fred McDowel or Allen Collins from Lynyrd Skynyrd. Allen wrote all three parts of Freebird and he's the cat responsible for the band's name since he was the one who lived in mortal fear of Leonard Skinner- the evil highschool gym teacher. Allen also wrote most of the guitar parts to songs like Sweet Home Alabama, Simple Man, Curtis Lowe, Tuesday's Gone, and Gimme Three Steps. Not only is Allen perhaps the most underappreciated artist, but he's also from one of the most underappreciated bands. Skynyrd is responsible for so much kickass music, and yet they have virtually no recognition. Another cat who deserves some appreciating is Robert Randolph. Who the hell said Bonnie Rait is the best damn slide guitar player out there? Fuck you B.B. King, I love you man, but Robert Randolph gets the cake- with extra icing on the side.
Mark Mothersbaugh. The man is a fucking genius. What he did in devo was astounding, and it's ashame that most people think they were some one hit wonder. Not only that, but all the things he has worked on since devo. I mean, look at all that he's done outside of devo. That's not even counting the hundreds of comercials he's work on, and all the great art he's made. ps: He puts subliminal messages in nearly all his comercial music. How's that for stickin it to the man?
Steve Shelley, or whatever his name is. The drummer from Sonic Youth. Without him, they would be just awful.
Some of you may be too young to understand, or have different tastes. I have to vote for John Denver. He played it all too! Piano, 12 string, banjo, mandolyn, name it!
yoko ono, becuase come on, she did break the misconception that songs have to be sang and there has to be musical harmony for it to be cool. she exposed more art in muisc than other artists..
